Dear Taylor,
What's up girl? Are you ok? I'm watching you go from sweet and proud country girl to petty and vengeful pop star. And I'm your concerned fan. You've always inspired me to keep a good reputation, but now I'm not sure what to think.
Let me start by saying that the things that your friends and Kanye have done/said to you in the past have been awful, and you have every right to hold a grudge against them if you want to. But is stooping to their level really going to make YOU feel better about yourself? You literally say in the song that Kanye and your ex-friends are making you release this vengeful album. Why let someone so petty and mean get in your head like that?
Let's talk about your lyrics first:
"Look what you made me do" You should never let someone control your actions, especially if those actions go against things that you've previously preached like "shaking it off" and writing songs with indirect messages in them instead of becoming what you're trying to rebel against. No one should "make you" do anything- and you were one of the people who taught me that.
Another lyric:
"Honey I rose up from the dead I do it all the time". You might have thought you were dead or felt like it, but you released 1989 and fans poured out their love for you - including me! I shamelessly wrote you a long (possibly three page long) letter thanking you for being amazing and inspiring me to be true to myself and helping me through dark times. You probably didn't even read it, though.
Even when Kanye did awful things, you always had support from your fans. Everyone looked up to you because you were being the bigger person through breakups and tough days. You've always had poise and a strong sense of self. Trust me, I'm learning how hard that is too. And for you constantly living in the tabloids with your life being slandered and your words twisted it must be triple as difficult. A lack of giving into petty drama is hard to do and even harder to find these days. You used to be a celeb we could be proud of.
"I got smarter, I got harder, in the nick of time". Yeah, the "harder" part is evident... the jury's still out on the "smarter" part. Why are you trying to look like some sex god when people have already been calling you one for years just the way you were? I think it can be great to flaunt it if you got it, and girl, you definitely got it, but this does make me worry about a little Dorian Gray potential- your outside stays beautiful while your insides rot.
And that's pretty much all I have to say on the lyrics because those are most of the lyrics anyway. If you really listen, at least a minute and a half of the three minute, thirty-five second song is the same lyrics over and over again: the "look what you made me do" part comes up 36 times (give or take some ooh's and just's) and the bridge is just two lines repeated over and over again. So I guess I'm moving on.
Let's talk about your lyric video. You're talking about the perfect crime, quite possibly when Kim K posted Kanye and your phone call of you confirming that he was allowed to publish the lyrics to his song Famous when he mentions you. He got away with sexualizing you because, in the video of your phone call with him, it looks like you're okay-ing it-- yes that was a perfect crime and what he said was wrong.
In this part, you reference the famous scene from Hitchcock's movie "Psycho" where Marion Crane looks in her rearview window while driving away from her crime scene and in this instance, I guess you'd be Marion in the situation.... but you know that chick dies, right? She was a thief running away from her crime and in the end, karma got her.
Admittedly, the snake and phone call spoken word thing was pretty clever- I'll give you that. And the subliminal messages are impressive. But, wow, aren't you tired of thinking up ways to be cleverly petty?
Your whole song is about how badly people who you thought were your friends have hurt you. Is hurting them going to make you feel better? Honestly, what is your end-game here? Do you think these people that you're dissing- the people who only care about themselves and superficial things- are going to apologize? Words give oxygen to the fire while in the past your silence has snuffed it out.
Then in your music video, you start out as a zombie. You say it's because you rise up from the dead all the time... when were you dead? Maybe to you, you were dead, but you've always been very alive to me. Maybe it's that you know in your heart of hearts that this is leading to your ultimate demise, just like Marion Crane.
Now people are saying that you sitting in a bathtub of jewels is a shot at Kim being robbed at gunpoint in France. Personally, I'm willing to say coincidence on that one just because I don't want to believe you would be so crass. With that being said, I like the dollar bill in the tub (maybe having to do with you winning that sexual assault case?)
Then you got all of your past selves: Teardrops On My Guitar Taylor, Award Winning Taylor (ironic because you were a no-show at the VMAs... did you plan that?), You Belong With Me Taylor, and even Shake It Off Taylor (LOL "shake it off". Irony, am I right?) amongst others. And they're all fighting with each other. Is this you telling your fans that you're having an internal identity crisis? Because that's what it looks like. And if that's the case, just stay true to your roots because your roots were you before you grew into a huge, famous, multi-million dollar tree.
And then all this on top of the fact that Kanye's mom died on November 10, this year is the tenth anniversary of her death and your album release date is November 10.... even if you didn't know that going into this, you know it now. Everyone is talking about it. I just think, no matter the feud, the dead should be left out of it.
There are some great parts of the music video (like the dollar bill) and I really admire the creativity (I'm all about symbolism). I just feel like you were always a breath of fresh spring air in the Dickens -"Coketown" that is Hollywood. Now you're just like all the rest.
So this is my second letter to you- and probably my last letter to you, Taylor, because frankly, you're not worth writing about anymore.
And I'll just leave it at that.
Sincerely,
Me
