8 Things To Look Forward To When Going Home For Summer

The time has come, the familiar winter chill Syracuse has made us accustomed to, throughout this endless winter, has become a refreshing spring breeze. The trees are beginning to bud, the sun is peeking out through the clouds, and students are finally sitting on our usually snow-covered quad. We are officially at the end of our year here at Syracuse.

I know we will all miss Syracuse dearly, whether your heart belongs to DJs or your best friends from your floor, we all have a strong connection here. It might seem painful to think about saying goodbye, but here are a few great things about going home that might make the summertime farewell a little bit easier.

1. Friends

We all have those amazing high school friends from home that we can't wait to see. These are the friends you have been texting relentlessly throughout the year, counting down the days until you see each other again. You'll get to reminisce about your high school days which fell like a lifetime away, drive to your favorite places and get into the same trouble you used to. These are the people that knew you before you came to Syracuse and made you laugh until you cried, why wouldn't you be excited to see them?

2. Smell of home

You don't know what it is, but something about your home smells like comfort and you can't get enough of it. This is the smell you'd put into a candle if you could because nothing in the world makes you more relaxed and cozy.

3. Home-cooked meals

The dining hall food at Syracuse is not exactly legendary, and the thought of some of that home cooked food you took for granted, oh so long ago, makes your mouth water. Eating some of that freshly-made-with-love food will cure your postpartum sadness from saying goodbye to Syracuse.

4. Sleeping in your own bed

Need I say more? Your bed, the warmest, safest, and coziest place in the world are just WAITING for you to jump on it.

5. Space

Sure, dorm life has its perks: you always have a friend around, someone's food to "borrow" and maybe even a closet full of clothes to shop from if your roommate is nice enough, but at the end of the day, we all like our space. Being home means you get your room all to yourself (unless you share your room with a sibling, in that case, I am very sorry please ignore #5). Now you have the luxury of staying in your towel after a shower as long as you want, and going to bed whenever you feel like it. FREEDOM!

6. Having a decent shower WITHOUT shower shoes

Again, need I say more? NO SHOWER SHOES. No gross bathrooms. No more hesitating to sign in the shower, sing your heart out, who cares?

7. Your favorite family member: your pet!

You've missed this little guy all year! You've FaceTimed your parents and begged to see your favorite family member and now your home and can cuddle with them all you want! Nothing but pure joy!

8. No classes

Last but certainly not least, NO MORE SCHOOL. You are free from the agonizing 8 am class all the way across campus or those monotonous lectures that just never seemed to end. You can sleep until when you want and do what you want with your time! No go off and have the best summer yet!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
