Finding Light In The Darkness: Suicide Prevention Month

No matter how dark it seems, there is always light out there somewhere, waiting to be found.

Dozens of paper bags illuminate the night. "John." "Logan." "Friend." "Daddy." Each bag contains a softly glowing tealight, and a name lovingly written on its exterior. UNCG students, faculty, and volunteers stand en masse, holding brightly gleaming candles that illuminate the night. Hundreds of colorful pinwheels whirl in the background- 1,100 of them, to be exact, one for every college student lost each year to suicide.

UNCG's Candlelight Vigil earlier this month in honor of Suicide Prevention Month remembered both college students fallen victim to suicide in the community and across the country, and the late family, friends and loved ones of UNCG students. We mourned those who lost their battles to mental illness, and honored those who are still fighting.

The dozens of candles lit that night weren't just to look pretty. They represented the light of each lost loved one that still burns in our memories and the light that each one of us represents. Each one of us is a light burning brightly in the darkness, and we have to remember that. No matter how dark things may seem, there is always light somewhere, and when things get tough, we have to look for that light.

There is always hope. Even when it seems like all hope is gone, we have to remember that there is always a light at the tunnel. It will get better. And when it does, you'll be so glad that you kept fighting. You owe it to yourself. You're worth it. Whether you feel like it or not, you're a unique, amazing, special person who deserves to be in this world.

You don't have to suffer in silence. There are many people who you can go to for help. Go to the Counseling Center, talk to a close friend or family member, or call the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273 TALK (8255).

Keep pushing on, friend. If you're struggling, know that you're not alone, and that you can do this, even if it feels like you can't. Take that first step towards recovery. Your happy, healthy future self will thank you.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
