Life In The Color Blue

Not all heroes wear capes - they wear badges.

There is a huge controversy throughout black and white communities that is rash and extremely arbitrary all throughout the United States. Each Tuesday and Thursday, I have had an opportunity to take a class that specifically speaks about the impression that race has on society. Essentially, all I've been taught was as a white person I was born a clone to the majority. I've learned and watched many videos portraying the “danger of a single story." A “single story” solely tells an individualistic story that often times is misused to describe an entire group. Now there are single stories against law enforcement as well. These media-based stories are often bias and have incorporated ideas of what society wants to think.

Constantly, police officers risk their lives to save others. It is disheartening to hear stories in which police officers are called “pigs,” “mother f***ers,” “crackers,” etc. Now think about one of your family members. This would not be acceptable for anyone to call one’s family member these slanderous words. The most important people in one’s life, selfless and merciful, getting disrespected is disgraceful. People in law enforcement are normal individuals, but they have a tough job.

Police officers are the ones that protect, honor and respect all individuals that come in contact with them. Being the daughter of a selfless, incredible man is something more honorable than being the daughter of a king, because my dad is my king. No one understands the hardship one has to deal with, day in and day out since his first day on the job.

The uniform they wear inhibits a sense of entitlement, and with this uniform authority SHOULD be abided by, but in most cases is not. With this uniform should come a shower of respect, not audacity for pain and misfortune for these graceful men and women. Just like the president has authority, so does a police officer. No matter how much authority and to what extent, they deserve respect. If they are given the respect that is utterly deserved, than any human will be treated with respect back, regardless of their race/gender/nationality. “When you’re a cop, and you're assisting a situation, you don't care what color anyone is.” It's not about what color anyone is. We have wonderful cops that come from many ethnicities and who come from different races. These officers who come from all different backgrounds wear a badge that provides honor because they provide a safe environment. They allow others to wake up and live another day. Ironically, many officers save lives, as they lose their own lives in the process.

I was forced to take off work and go to a talk solely about “racism.” Once I arrived, I sat quietly in a seat that was waiting for me next to my class. After maybe five minutes, I couldn't believe how rash and ignorant these individuals were being. They spoke about ALL cops, not SOME, but ALL. They spoke about how cops were deliberately racist, calling them “pigs” and how society and the system is “fixed,” but sadly this is the issue society is dealing with today. People who do the wrong thing should be penalized, but not many people can accept the consequences of their own actions. If they are threatened they are allowed to take action, but many people don't seem to understand this concept. Many individuals think it's okay to physically or verbally abuse a police officer, but in reality it is monstrous.

Yes, there will always be corruption and unfairness, but every profession has these substandard situations. Take into consideration what these men and women do each day and try to appreciate what they do. It may not be flawless, but their efforts are altruistic. It's not just Blue Lives Matter, it's not just Black Lives Matter, it's All Lives Matter.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
