At some point in your college career you are going to be sitting at the library annoyed by someone around you. Many people here at Marquette do not understand the right way to act when at the library. We all know the one main rule of all libraries, be quiet. When people think of this rule, they think of this as talking quietly or not at all. However, there's more to it than that. And honestly, there are more rules than just be quiet however, that is where we are going to start.
------------------------------------------------
1) The Universal Law: Be Quiet
As we all know, almost complete silence is expected in all libraries. However, this rule isn't just talking about speaking quietly. Its about being quiet in general. Don't whip out a bag of chips while studying deep in the cave that is memorial library and also, don't have a 30 minute conversation on the phone with your buddy from home; this is not the time or place for that. Here's another thought: if you're going to the library to meet with a friend to study for an exam or work on a project, reserve a study room or go to the bridge. I don't want to hear you talking about the female reproductive system while I'm trying to write a theology paper.
2) Tables: how to choose the right one for you
We all understand the struggle that is finding a table at the library. You walk in with 2 other friends and there's no place in sight for you all to sit together and do homework. Why? Because one person has decided to take an entire table for themselves. DON'T DO THIS. If you are at the library by yourself and no one is meeting you there, don't sit at a four person table. Sit by the computers or in the comfy chairs. I understand you have a lot of stuff but I don't think you need that much space. However, if you still choose to sit at a bigger table, keep your stuff consolidated so if someone comes along and wants to join you at the table, they don't have to awkwardly ask you to move your stuff. Thanks!
3) BE QUIET
Did I mention be quiet? If you're gonna bring a snack, make it a quiet snack. Also, don't be clicking your pen or tapping your pencil own the table. Things like that bother a lot of people. You know what else bothers them? When your music is playing so loud that people around you can hear it. How can one even study when the music is that loud? Just in general, be quiet, as quiet as you are when you come home after curfew and you're already grounded for 2 weeks.
-----------------------------------------------
As I finish writing this I realize I may have came across a little harsh but that's just because the kid behind me at the library has been talking to his friend on the phone for a solid 45 minutes. Happy studying!
