For those "Star Wars" fans who have been raving over the newest addition to the franchise, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", fans have been theorizing about the possibility of a gay relationship forming between ex-Storm Trooper Finn and rebel pilot Poe.
When the storm trooper working for the New Order suddenly rebels and frees prisoner Poe Dameron, Poe and the storm trooper, then known as FN-2817, must work together to escape the New Order. In the process, Poe gives FN-2817 a new name, Finn, and they escape the New Order's base together with Poe piloting the space craft and Poe manning the guns. They escape, only to crash land on Jakku, a desert planet, in which the two are separated. Finn thinks Poe is dead, finding only his jacket, and begins to wear it. Later it is revealed that Poe is in fact alive, and he tells Finn to keep his jacket, stating "it looks better on you".
This is where fans began to go crazy and people began to wonder: Will Finn and Poe become Star War's first gay couple? This ship, called "Storm Pilot" by fans on the internet, has been one of the biggest debates about the new "Star Wars" movie.
Fans viewing the new movie see parallels with the newest trio and the other trios from the previous films. Anakin, Luke and Rey are the powerful new Jedi and the main character of their respective trilogies, while Padme, Leia and Poe are influential politicians and rebel leaders, and Obi Wan, Han Solo, and Finn are the best friends to the main character. Some fans see the series following the prequels' path and having Rey fall in love with either Poe or Finn, while others see her following Luke's path, following the Jedi code to not form attachments such as marriage, or romantic love.
Some fans say that a relationship between Poe and Finn would not be the first gay relationship, citing R2-D2 and C-3PO from the prior movies as the first. C-3PO is voiced by a male actor, Anthony Daniels, and R2-D2's suit was manned by a man named Kenny Baker, both robots being referred to as "he". While these two were never intended to be seen as a couple, some fans have insisted they be so based on the two's constant shenanigans and the fact that the two are rarely seen apart, the main separation being when R2-D2 went with Luke to find and train with Yoda to become a jedi while C-3PO stayed with Hans Solo and Princess Leia. While the two robots haven't shared any on-screen romantic moments, a small sect of fans insist the friendship is more than that, though other fans insist it cannot be due to the fact that robots cannot have a gender, though they may be portrayed as such.
However, there is no denying that while Lucasfilm owned the franchise, there was no confirmation of any LGBT relationships in the "Star Wars" world. Whether R2-D2 and C-3PO were a couple or not, fans are still wondering whether the new owners of the franchise, Disney, will indeed make "Storm Pilot" the Star Wars' first official gay relationship. If so, this would be a huge step for the LGBT community, one of the largest in popular culture alongside JK Rowling's announcement of a gay Dumbledore and various celebrities being public about their sexuality and support of the LGBT community, such as Lady Gaga and Neil Patrick Harris. Whether the relationship will be confirmed or not, the next movie in the series is sure to be a major hit.
