A Letter to the College Senior

Dear Senior,

Today might be your last first day of school...ever. For the past 21 years or so, you have woken up on a September morning either super excited to go back to the world of education or dreading it completely. Well today will be the last time you do that. After, you will be either super excited to go to your first day of your new job or you will be dreading it completely. This is now the real, real world. You have that degree that cost more money than you hoped it would, you have the skills (hopefully) to go out and rock that new job or job interview, and you have your college besties by your side to reminisce about your college experience. This doesn't have to be as terrifying as you are making it. It really can be the beginning of a whole new adventure.

Most people hate even thinking about "adulting". Bills, jobs, responsibilities- ew. But it could be fun. This is your chance to really be who you want to be. Throughout college, you realize that you aren't completely on your own. You still might have mom and dad helping you out or you might still have them telling you what to do with your life. Now it really is all up to you. You have grown over these last four years. You have changed so much. Made new friends, lost new friends. Found love, lost it. You have grown in ways you never even imagined and now is the time to put it all out there for everyone to see.

Though looking towards the future might be exciting and daunting at the same time, make sure you also remember that these will be "your last" moments in college. Your last homecoming. Your last spring break. Your last annual trip with friends. Take them all in just like you did your senior year of high school. Remember that these memories and friends will be with you forever. They helped you grow as a person and into an adult. They were there when you had your first legal drink. They were there when you had your heart broken and all the little things in between. Maybe they were your first roommates ever. The truth of the matter is, you ate, slept, and breathed together in a small room 24/7. These people have become your family. Don't forget that.

College was the best years of our lives, so they say. A bunch of firsts happen here, but college is only the beginning of your adult lives. There are adventures waiting for you that you couldn't even imagine. So when you are feeling down or nervous or anxious about May creeping up, remember that you were feeling the same thing four years ago and things turned out pretty darn well.

Sincerely,

Another College Senior.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
