We all know the assumptions with missionary work: go overseas, share a good word, maybe do construction, take a selfie with some orphans, ask people for money, and make yourself look good. Well, I would like to set a new standard of perspective for Christian missions, because, at the core, it's completely different from this sad, selfish standpoint.
1. What's this "Good Word" anyways?
Christian mission has a core message: You are loved by one who gave His life for you. It also has a core mission: love as the Lord has shown love towards you. It's this message and mission that takes people out of the ashes of their past and brings them into the light of redemption for their life.
2. Aren't you just making an excuse to travel?
It is vital that this message makes its way into all the places because Christ called the message to go out to the ends of the earth. The place you go to isn't nearly as important, as long as you GO. The amazing thing with the message I am called to deliver is that it is just as valuable to share it with my neighborhood as it is to share in the jungles of the Amazon. It is an honor and a privilege to go share in exotic locations, not simply an excuse to travel.
3. Are you just making yourself look charitable?
The heart of true Christian ministry seeks to serve the Lord by loving Him and loving others. The hope is to demonstrate the heart of Christ to people. The Christ that loves to step into people's story and remind them how valuable they are and how He wants the best for them and how grace has redeemed the ugly in their life through their trust in Him.
4. Why do you always ask for money?
This profession is unique in that the church (the body of believers in Jesus Christ) has the opportunity to help support those in missions. Ministry in missions is a full-time job that does not always provide a salary. The people who are asked for financial support are also being asked to be prayer and spiritual partners.
5. Are you crazy?
Depends on your opinion, but yes, in a sense, I am crazy excited about the message of the Jesus Christ. I am not afraid to share that message here at home or even far to the ends of the earth. It doesn't make sense for me to hold still about it. So call me crazy, but let's keep talking missions.
