It’s been six months since Michelle and I ended our friendship. On the day it happened, tears were running down my cheeks because my eyes could not hold in all my emotions. I was upset. I was mad. I was disappointed. I was in denial. I was hurt. I was in pain. I was heartbroken. How could someone so close just slip away? I blame life. Life got in the way and broke our friendship apart, but I couldn’t help but think it was all my fault. I blame myself more. I felt regret.
I could never stop thinking of her. She helped me shed my old skin to become the person I am. I even had more of my best friends help me out with that since I no longer had her love, time, and support. I was becoming new. I was becoming happier. I was becoming my truest self. I felt fine for once, but I always miss her. Sometimes, I wish we were still friends.
One night, in one of my dreams, I saw a blurry image. It looked like a ghost, but it wasn’t. I thought I was dreaming of Michelle, but I wasn’t. It was her. My old self. It was the part of me I left behind because of the lies and games she set me up with to feed on my happiness so that one day she would take control of me once again. Now, she has returned.
“I have seen how you’ve been since you and Michelle ended your friendship. You may say you’re fine, but I know you dearly miss her.”
“What do you want from me? I thought I made it clear that I wouldn’t associate myself with you anymore.”
“But you and I are one in the same. I am a part of you as you are a part of me. No matter how much you try to run away from me or push me away, I’m still here.”
“What do you want?”
“I have seen the pain you felt. I know how hurt you were. That is why I have come to help. I can change one event from the past as if it never happened so that you don’t have to feel miserable and upset all the time. And it can be any event you want to change, although I think we know what you really want.”
“What’s the catch?”
“There is no catch. I change that event so you can live a happier future.” She looked at me with the face of confidence. I could see it in her eyes, the words she chooses, the ideas she has, and the smirk on her face that was supposed to be a smile. I knew I was being manipulated.
“There is something else, though. I can change the event, but you have to let me back in your life. Here, I am abandoned, and you never abandoned me, even when you became new. You always looked out for me. You could never leave me. I was a friend.”
“Fine, but you better leave me alone when I say so.”
“As you want. Now, name the event.”
“Michelle.”
“As you wish,” and the past was changed. I felt it when I awoke out of my dream.
