Stars Hollow, Connecticut is a fictitious town. However, vibrant personalities, kitschy festivals, and two Gilmore Girls make fiction a reality. Rory and Lorelai Gilmore are a mother daughter duo who are actually best friends and the main characters on the ever popular dramedy Gilmore Girls. Throughout the course of its seven year run, viewers followed Rory and Lorelai as their relationship blossomed.
Luckily, fans of the show are in for a new journey with Gilmore as the hugely anticipated Netflix revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year In the Life streams on Netflix this fall. Not only will the revival inspire new generations, but it will bring a refreshing taste on the impact of the original show. Personally, this show has had an enormous impact on my life. Here are things that have stood out the most as a Gilmore Girls fan.
You do not have to have a man to control your life.
While much of the show's premise revolved around the girls' romantic relationships, when they were single, they were content. Rather than having two main characters that were always pining after a man, they were confident in the decisions they made and exemplified what it was to be an independent woman
It is acceptable to struggle during your freshman year of college.
Rory's freshman year was the most realistic freshman year I have seen on television. Not only did she do things like go to her professor's office hours, but she also struggled. She did things like drop a class, fought to find her place on campus, and dealt with the reality of being away from home.
At the end of the day, your family will always have your back.
No matter how complicated the relationship may be, at the end of the day, family is forever. While the relationship that Lorelai had with her parents was strained at times, they had her back. Gilmore Girls appropriately demonstrated that all American families were not so typical.
Love your hometown.
Stars Hollow, the Connecticut town where Gilmore takes place, was a large part of the plot line of the whole show. While some of the residents were quirky, and others nosy, they fought for one another. It was almost as if the town was a secondary character in the show, as it molded the characters into who they were meant to be.
It is okay to be a feminist.
For me, this was the biggest takeaway from the show. Gilmore had a uniquely feminist tone, which was refreshing for the time. The fact that the show centered around two confident women was enough to make the show revolutionary. Thanks to characters like Lorelai and Rory, little girls will have television role models for years to come.
Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life premieres on Netflix on November 25. I absloutely cannot wait to catch up with Lorelai and Rory as they take on the new seasons of life.
