In 2006, The Devil Wears Prada, arguably was released. The movie follows Andy Sachs, a Northwestern college graduate interested in publication and journalism, as she lands a job as the assistant to powerful fashion magazine editor, Miranda Priestly. Andy - once naive to fashion - becomes consumed by fashion, the fashion industry, and pleasing Miranda, as her personal life suffers. Andy realizes that she has lost sight of herself and the dream that brought her to New York in the first place, and leaves to pursue her career in publication.
But The Devil Wears Prada addresses more than a young woman swallowed up by the glitz and glam of the New York fashion industry; it addresses so many little life lessons than we often overlook implementing in our lives.
1. Always, always look your best.
First impressions are everything. You never know when you will meet your next employer or colleague... and you never know what they will think.
2. Draw a line between your work life and your personal life.
Leave your work drama at your work place. Be careful not to take out your frustrating day at work on your friends and family.
3. Be honest with yourself.
The world will be much easier to deal with (and laugh it) if you're always honest with yourself.
4. Be efficient.
Get the job done as soon as possible = less stress for you and a happier boss.
5. Look up from your phone.
It's always good to pay attention to your surroundings. Avoiding being hit by a car is always a good decision. Don''t be Emily.
6. Sunglasses make you look more powerful.
I mean, look at her. Who wouldn't take that look seriously?
7. Bad breathe is always a no.
People smell it. That's all.
8. Bad weather is not an excuse.
The weather sucks but don't let it hold you back from your day - Miranda didn't...
9. Find a job that makes you happy.
The most amazing job in the world to everyone else may not be the job for you. A million girls may kill for your job but in the end, if it doesn't make you happy, don't waste your time.
10. Don't complain.
It will get you nowhere.
And the single most important lesson I learned from The Devil Wears Prada...
11. You must always put yourself first.
As selfish as this sounds, at the end of the day, we have to live with ourselves. You are the only person who will always be with you so it's important to make decisions that you will be happy with.
As Miranda Priestly would say, "That's all.
