I didn’t really know what I was signing up for when I agreed to adopt Skippy about 18 months ago. I knew how to care for a dog, the basics of feeding them and walking them, but I didn’t know the profound impact he would have on my life.
1. Having a dog has taught me patience
There are times when he tests my patience by stretching and avoiding me before I have to give him medication or wrap him up before I leave in case of an accident. He’s taught me to be patient with him and let him do things at his own pace.
2. Having a dog has taught me, unconditional love
The only way he can show me affection is by playing, giving kisses and being around me. His companionship is the only repayment I need from him.
3. Having a dog has taught me to rely on my gut instincts
He’s taught me to learn to trust myself and the decisions I make without second-guessing myself.
4. Having a dog has taught me to be resourceful
I’ve always thought of myself as being someone who could think outside the box, but he’s put me into situations in which I have to come up with an immediate solution to the problem I’ve never encountered before.
5. Having a dog has taught me responsibility
I remember thinking, “he’s completely dependent on me”, the day after I got him. While this scared me in the beginning and felt like a lot of pressure, I’ve adjusted to the responsibility of keeping another being alive.
6. Having a dog has taught me to slow down and enjoy the little things
He absolutely loves the sun and lays in it all day when he can. He also loves his walks which helps me love them. My favorite day of the week to walk him is Sunday morning when it’s calm and quiet.
7. Having a dog has taught me what true devotion and loyalty look like
No matter how long you are gone, a dog jumps for joy the second they see you because they just love you so much. Moreover, they never forget you and when they see you again after a long time, their joy is overwhelming. He’s also there no matter what kind of day I’m having and is ready to just sit by me all night long if that’s what I need.
8. Having a dog has taught me to get enough sleep and exercise
He’ll lay around when he needs to sleep and play when he has the energy. He’s shown me how deserving we all are of a good night’s sleep after three or four walks during the day.
9. Having a dog has taught me to always be curious about everything
Whenever he gets startled by something, he’ll investigate it to make sure everything is okay, and whenever he is on the trail for a hidden treat, he doesn’t give up until he succeeds.
