I enjoy living alone rather than with a roommate, and I accept the responsibility needed for it. I love my personal space and having adult responsibilities. Not only has it given me lots of freedoms, but I've learned a great amount from it and believe you don't really "grow up" until you experience being on your own and having to take care of yourself without being reminded to do everyday things.
1. You learn a lot about yourself
You may think you know yourself, but living alone will teach you things you would never believe. You learn your true habits and find ways of living that work best for you. Some people may learn that they do not enjoy living alone and need company. Others, such as myself, learn that living alone is the best way of living.
2. You can't really do whatever you want, but you do have a lot of freedom
Obviously, you have to pay your bills on time and be responsible, but there is no one to stop you from sneaking a midnight snack.
3. Who knew how quickly things could get dirty?
You may think cleaning every few weeks is enough, but it's not. You will also discover places that get dirty that you never even thought of cleaning!
4. You will miss your family, so make sure you stay in touch
It can definitely be hard not seeing your mom every day, so keeping in touch is extremely important. Even just sending a text reminding them that you love and miss them will mean more than you think.
5. You learn to be independent and do things for yourself
You'll learn how to do things you didn't know how to do and never thought you'd need to do!
6. Even though you enjoy your alone time, you also learn to appreciate your friends
Sometimes you might get lonely, so it's very important to stay in touch with your friends.
7. You can only live off of boxed mac and cheese for so long
To my surprise, yes, you can get sick of mac and cheese and boxed foods. It's also not good to live just eating that forever, so it is definitely important to learn how to cook. It doesn't even have to be anything complicated. Just making chicken or basic foods is a good way to switch it up!
8. You find what makes your home "homey" to you
Whether it's how you decorate or the things you do, you'll find ways to make your home personal to you. For me, going to get a Christmas tree and decorating made my place feel cozy and like a home.
