An evening of grand celebration "Sangeet Sammilani" meaning musical extravaganza brought together several hundreds of Tennessee residents in a well decorated lit up venue at Memphis Cordova Community Center. The event was hosted by Mid South Bengali Association on May 18, 2019 . The program opened with an introductory speech by the president of MSBA, Pinaky Chakravarty and then the cultural secretary Avantika Banerjee took the centerstage and unveiled the curtains to the fascinating audience. The Master of ceremony, Millie Paul set up the auditorium with an effortless sense of style throughout the evening.

The musical evening had an array of colorful shows with professional vocalist, dancers and kids and young talents from the Memphis city and neighboring states. The showstopper of the evening was Debarshi Roy, a vocalist from Mississippi, USA who is also a trained classical sitar player. He is a well-known face who appeared over the years in several reality shows in India, including Sa Theke Sa (ETV Bangla) and Eto Noi Sudhu Gaan (TARA Bangla) - well known Indian reality shows. He performed widely across USA in different events and his innumerable shows with his live band -Indus Beatz across Midwest attracted immense attention in recent times. He recently collaborated with Minnesota based Parabashi Project and released singles-"Balukona". His several melodious presentations from Rabindrasangeet (Tagore creations - the nobel laureate) to Nazrulgeeti and modern songs, the nostalgic moments drew thunderous applause every minute.

Few other programs worth mentioning were recitation, Duet Cello and Instrumental presentation, Piano play, Classical Indian Dance Fusion. A group of few young kids performed a dance on a popular remix. Those deserve special mention were the theme named "Amar Rabi" depicting the life of Rabindranath Tagore (Nobel Laureate) through their narrations, with a scintillating video backdrop presentation and range of several Tagore creations. The event was made more entertaining by group chorus.

The musical event was followed by a sumptuous catered dinner from a local restaurant, the appetite could never be complete without it. The sound arrangements and smooth handling of sound system by Arjun Sardar without which program would not have been so soulful and soothing.The participants all worked hard and put together a magnificent show for the evening and exhibited the rich Bengali heritage and culture in the home away from motherland and bonded the city of Memphis- the land of Elvis Presley surrounded with a breath of fresh air.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
