The Struggle of a Lack of Motivation: College Perspective

Spring semester is coming to an end.

The Struggle of a Lack of Motivation: College Perspective
Alex Atiyeh

It is that time of year where college students are finishing up their spring semesters and taking their final exams. I know that University of Pitt let their students go not too long ago. Others will be getting out within the next week or two, but not this guy. I go home May 30th.

FML.

Why so late you ask? Well, my school has a 2 month long winter break, so everything for us is sort of pushed back. Our last day of classes is during the week before Memorial Day, and our exams begin May 22nd I believe. Now I had the luck of not having any finals last semester, so I'm assuming I am being punished for that this semester. My first exam is May 23rd and my only other exam is on May 30th. That's a whole freaking week where I won't be doing anything except studying for math (a.k.a. not worth my time).

I'm at the point in the school year where I need to be on summer vacation. Yeah I'll most likely have two jobs in the summer and I'll be super busy, but I'd rather have that and get paid than to be doing work for classes and stressing about exams. I am in the mindset where I have no motivation whatsoever. Now, I don't MIND going to class because it gives me something to do and sometimes it is actually fun. My problem is getting all my work done. I'd rather be outside on the turf playing wiffle ball or doing something active with my friends than doing homework and studying.

Spring fever has gotten to me.

I'm not one to procrastinate which is a HUGE help because it forces me to do my work and get it all done. I prefer getting all my work done earlier in the day than waiting to do it at night because the night time is my free time. It just sucks as of right now because I have a bunch of exams coming up, projects to do, and rehearsals to attend for my a capella group's concert May 11th (which I am super pumped for and you should come). I don't like being stretched too thin when it comes to my schedule. A lot of people hate that and it just sucks.

Another reason why I am experiencing all this is because most of my friends are coming home soon from college, and I wish I could see them. Looking on the positive side of things, I am glad that I'll have only three months of summer because anything more than that would be too much for me.

Having a lack of motivation in college is a dangerous game to play. If you slack off the tiniest bit and don't put in the effort you are screwed my friend. Grades go down and your mind goes insane. Losing motivation is not an option. If you do, you lose the game. You can't lose the game.

If you're struggling to find motivation right now for your classes and exams, just remember that it will all be over soon. Use your time wisely and don't give up. Make sure to take breaks in between doing all of you work because personally that works for me and it keeps me motivated and relaxed.

To all of you with exams coming up, I wish you the best of luck. Summer vacation is just around the corner, and I know you can do it. Stay strong and do your work.

Your Friend,

Al

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

Creating your schedule for the upcoming semester can be an exciting process. You have the control to decide if you want to have class two-days a week or five-days a week. You get to check things off of your requirement checklist. It's an opportunity for a fresh start with new classes (which you tell yourself you'll never skip.) This process, which always starts out so optimistic, can get frustrating really quickly. Here are 25 thoughts you have when registering for classes.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
