Kesha's New Single "Praying" Is Exactly What We Needed Right Now

Kesha came back on the music scene today with a power ballad about her sexual assault case with Dr. Luke. This song isn't from the Kesha you remember. Leaving behind "Tik Tok" and "Your Love Is My Drug" to tackle one of the biggest battles she's faced, she released a music video (which you can watch here) that deals with an eating disorder, suicidal thoughts, depression, and the overall feeling of hopelessness that comes with someone else controlling your life.

In the time of "exposing" others for views, Kesha chose to take the high road. She's been fighting for her right to record since late 2014, but the abuse that she dealt with began far before that. It's common for female entertainers to be taken advantage of by high-ranking men in the industry, who promise fame and fortune, only to be subjected to their horrid sexual desires. Did Dr. Luke deserve to be "exposed"? Absolutely he did. He's a disgusting man and deserves to be blackballed by the entire music industry. What Kesha's new song is saying to be is that she took all of her anger at Dr. Luke, her frustration with the justice system and the record label, and channeled it all into her music.

The bottom line is, she delivers a message of forgiveness above all else. Redemption for her abuser is hoped and prayed for. Do I think that Kesha identifies as a Christian now? I doubt it. But could she have found the love of Jesus at the darkest point in her life, and then turned to His relentless love and grace and mercy? Absolutely. Religious affiliation aside, this message of forgiveness isn't a popular one. People live for drama, people want there to be fallouts and Twitter rants and the airing of dirty laundry because it's entertaining. But maybe we can all learn something from the girl who brushes her teeth with a bottle of Jack.

Kesha writes almost all of her own music, and she writes for other artists. Did you know that? She is extremely talented, and who she is was buried for a long time. The justice system failed her like it failed millions of other victims of rape. The record label failed her. The people who were supposed to protect her failed her. Some of the lyrics of Praying say,

"You brought the flames and you put me through hell

I had to learn how to fight for myself

And we both know all the truth I could tell

I'll just say this is I wish you farewell."

She fought for herself, tooth and nail, and instead of sending out her hit list, she's releasing a wave of love, grace, and forgiveness. Though she may never fully forgive her abuser, she's moving on.

What I think we should take away from her song is the strength that comes after the hell you get put through. Depression is the deepest darkest pit and it feels impossible to get out of. It sounds so cliche, but it's true. The most beautiful mornings come after the darkest nights. I used to hear that and think, "Well, I woke up this morning with the same heaviness on my heart and the same self-deprecating thoughts in my head. I wonder what morning that's referring to." But now that I've been through a pretty hellish three years of college, the morning is starting to break through. That I can wake up and not feel like the weight of the world is on my shoulder. My faith has helped me through it all, as implied by Kesha's song.

Don't let the voices of other control you. You are strong, brave, independent, talented. You were created with a purpose and for a purpose. Only you can fulfill that purpose. Get out of bed, seize the day. You can do this. They do not control you. You are so loved and worthy of love. Take that into your heart, and believe it. I leave you with the best lyrics from the song:

"And you said that I was done

Well, you were wrong and now the best is yet to come."

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
