When Kanye West tickets went on sale for The Life Of Pablo tour, I knew I had to go to the concert. The album was amazing and from seeing what Kanye is like according to the media, I knew he would put on an absolutely amazing show. Little did I know when I purchased my tickets, that this concert would be the best concert I had ever attended and possibly ever will.
In preparation for the concert, I purchased a signature t-shirt from Kanye's merchandise. If I was going to be in Kanye's presence, I was going to have to dress the part. I drove an hour away from my school to attend the concert with one of my best friends. As we headed into the arena, we knew we were in for a wild night.
The atmosphere before the show was quite interesting. I was taking in the arena and the people who filled it. Many different types of people were in attendance. People were dressed in a range of outfits from very Kanye-esq, the look that I went for, to going all out in their finest clothes. Everyone was highly anticipating his performance as it got close to the starting time.
The concert was scheduled to begin at 8 p.m., but from previous concerts we knew that he had been starting the show later than what was scheduled. We waited a half an hour, then an hour, and at that point tension started to build in the audience. Where was Kanye? A half an hour later, in typical Kanye fashion, he began the show an hour and a half later. Better late than never, right?
The concert began and I don't think I have ever witnessed anything greater in my life. The vibe of the arena changed from anxious to hype. He came out on an elevated, moving platform that was attached to a structure in the center of the arena by cables. With seats in section 124, my friend and I questioned whether or not we would be able to see him well, but when he came out and his platform ended up right in front of us, our concerns went out the window.
The arena was dark, but lit with reds and yellows, only to reveal Kanye's silhouette and nothing more. Fog filled the arena, making it even harder to see him clearly, but his big presence surely filled the room. Each song he played made the audience sing along. Kanye was very inclusive of the audience throughout the show. He would stop singing at points to let the audience chime in and he even called fans out throughout the show. I have never seen an audience more into an artists music before. Everyone in the stadium was dancing along and interacting in a way that I have never seen before. The general admission section, below his stage, was a massive mosh pit, yet everyone seemed to be coming together in a positive way.
My favorite part of the show was how authentic it was. Most concerts I attend are all about the performance and how flashy it can look to the audience. This show was all about the experience and the atmosphere. Kanye would periodically stop a song in the middle and say "Hold up, I love this one, we gotta play it back again," and simply started the song over. I have never seen an artist so into their performance before. His authenticity was really shown. Another thing I enjoyed was how all his songs blended together. It made the concert a perfect length. He played a bout 30 songs, yet I didn't find myself bored or thinking that it was too long at all.
At the end of the concert, his platform lowered, and he simply waked off and out of the arena as if he hadn't just played an entire show. I have never seen anything more Kanye in my life.
This concert will be one that I will never forget. From beginning to end, he knew how to grasp the audiences attention and include us in his performance. I highly encourage that everyone attends a concert on this current tour because I feel as though it is something that everyone should get to experience.
Kanye West, you are a legend.
