6 Things You Can Do Rather Than Complain

Complaining is such an easy thing to do. It's actually one of the easiest things to do and there are people who can find anything to complain about. Some people thrive on complaining and make their friends through mutual complaints. But for those that are trying to be a little bit more positive in life, here are some things you can do rather than complain that will help you feel better.

1. Say Something

Don't complain to your friend or co-worker, actually say something about the thing that's bothering you and why. You never know the response you'll get.

2. Offer A Different Solution

The Boss says you have to work on a Saturday? Negotiate or offer some other idea that may help. What if you stay late on Thursday to get all of that extra work done so you don't have to come in? Or how about you work on Saturday but don't have to come in Monday. Just brainstorm and see what can be done!

3. Name Three Positives

Any situation can suck if you're in the mindset that it sucks. Next time you're going to complain, name three things, or five or ten things that you're grateful for or that are good in your life. They can be related to the situation or completely different - it doesn't matter, just name a few good things to help change your perspective and make you a little bit grateful.

4. When In Doubt, Turn Up The Tunes

Pissed? Turn on some screaming music to let it out. Need to move? Throw on some dance tunes. Put on whatever you can blast in your headphones to help change around the situation to make you feel better. Music always helps.

5. Think Of The Fun Times

Before complaining, think of a time that you really couldn't help but laugh or a happy memory. Remember that time your brother spilled food everywhere and you died laughing? Oh yeah, that'll get a chuckle out of you. Then, you'll be ready to take on the situation.

6. Cute Animal Pictures

This is always a go-to when you're about to start complaining. Bring up a cute puppy picture - either of your dog or a random one - or a different baby animal. The cuteness will change your mind instantly. It's basically scientifically proven.

There's always something to complain about but honestly, there's always something good to look forward to or to remember also. Don't let the frustration put you in a rut. Just think of something good, get the job done, and keep on grooving.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
