Recently, I had a conversation with a friend about her major and her doubts on whether it was the right one for her. And it just hit me in that moment, she is one of the many students across the nation who are never 100% sure if their major is right or not.
It's a constant struggle that has plagued us for generations and will continue on. But you know what, it's ok because in life you're never always certain about things. It's part of being an adult and making grown-up decisions. I've "officially" changed my major only once, but have declared 3 different majors before.
Number one was to be a fashion designer and create a line that would wow on New York Fashion Week, my 2nd was to be a music composer - someday be the next Hans Zimmer, and my 3rd was an animal behaviorist - the next great dog whisperer. Clearly, I was heavily influenced by the celebrities of these fields. But I could never truly see myself doing these jobs long term.
Eventually, I found something that I was actually interested in pursuing. And you wanna know a little secret, I'm constantly doubting myself and whether I made the "right" decision or not. There are nights where I lay in bed stressing out over the "what ifs" until I tire myself out. And then there are other days where I feel on top of the world. I'm killing it in my classes, grades are great, and I feel rejuvenated to continue on this path.
What I'm trying to get at is, don't stress and worry over declaring your major right off the bat. Take your time, you just might go through 3 or more majors before you find "the One." Or you could be one of the lucky bunch who knew what they wanted since grade school. As cliche as it sounds, life is not a race, it's meant to enjoy the journey and the experiences you'll have.
