Welcome To Ithaca College

To the freshman out there, or the transferring students who are getting ready to embark on their journey to Ithaca college. Get ready. The first year of your college experience is the most memorable and life changing year of you life. In a matter of 24 hours you turn from being a recent high school graduate still living under your parents rules to a new person who's independent, alone, and has the cleanest slate to start from. It is bittersweet and a little scary but don't worry, it gets easier.

Lucky for us, Ithaca makes sure we feel as welcomed as possible. Dorm buildings are grouped into communities, where RAs, students and staff organize all sorts of events that help you feel like you're included and part of a community. Take advantage of these opportunities. This is how you meet and get close to your neighbors. You're not just living with your roommate. You're living with probably around 20 other people on your floor. These people are the ones who you will go out with, eat meals with and become a small family with. It's always beneficial to become close with these people as well as your RA. Always remember, that everyone is going through this new transition just like you so everyone is willing to meet you.

Just like these school run activities there are more town wide. From Apple Fest, to Ithaca fest, to Chili Fest, there's always something to do in the town and there's always more to see. Most of this occurs downtown in the commons, which you'll find yourself there quite frequently. The commons will be your best friend. From clothes, to vinyls, to pizza at 2am, the commons has got you covered. It will basically be your second home. And for your third home away from home? The TCAT. The bus system that makes it so easy to travel around. For $1.50 you can go anywhere you want in the area. (Yes $1.50, transferring buses doesn't cost you anything). And for those of you who do not think they will ever use the bus: yes you will, you will soon know the drivers by names.

Other than the town of Ithaca, here are some things you need to know about your freshman year. There will be times you want to give up. There will be times you don't think you can survive college, but I promise you you can. The first semester is always the toughest but by second semester you'll be dreading leaving. You will find your place on campus, and will learn more about yourself in one year than you have in 18. So be excited.

Also remember where you came from. Though everything is new and shiny remember the town you came from and the people who made you who you are. Don't forget to keep in touch with your friends and family and keep them close. You never really know how much you need them until they're gone.

Lastly, remember that even though you're here to learn, have fun! ....just not too much fun.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
