It is super disappointing hearing from students that they have this awful professor that could not have cared less about their progress. Now your first assumption may be, well only those with a bad grade would talk like this. Your second assumption may be, oh well the professor was difficult and didn't just hand out an easy grade. Your third assumption may be, that we did not go to the professor for outside help.
Tell me, if a professor was to be absolutely rude in class, degrading, and unwelcoming, does that make you comfortable to go to office hours? If you go, you will basically cry about how you cannot learn anything because you are trying to teach yourself.
I've had very good and respectful professors where I did not necessarily get an amazing grade, but I learned a lot! Isn't that what matters? What is the point of memorizing material?
I should be able to take an exam or give a presentation with the NEW knowledge I have obtained. Instead, I am expected to spit that out verbatim on a piece of paper. That proves that I know how to remember and forget. I should be able to apply that information.
Seeing as college is meant to set you up for the "real world," I do not see how my memorization skills will apply to jobs requiring innovative thoughts and working with people.
I respect my professors, but some do not respect their students and I've heard it from many others. Today, with the thousands of dollars people are paying to go to school, there SHOULD NOT be a question of if your professor is good.
Half of the time, the ones I'd like to take a survey on in school that allows us to rate them, do not give that option.
People have different teaching styles, and that's fine. But if I am sitting in class, not understanding a thing, have ridiculous assignments, and on top of that the professor is just rude, then what am I paying for? Also if more than half of the class is failing, then that is definitely not the students' fault.
I don't care if I get an A or a C (take this lightly). If I am wasting my time, my money is going towards that person staying and teaching in school.
It should not be the case that I have to thank certain professors for being good. That means that it is rare. And frankly, that's just sad. If anything, it should be me thanking professors for being beyond good! There should not be a level of bad.
I'm sorry if this is rough, unfiltered, and blunt. I'm a positive person but, this has been bothering me.
For the record, I understand there are SEVERAL and MANY wonderfully dedicated professors and that the job is NOT easy. So thank you for those that respect their students, and work hard to push them to live up to their greatest potential.
