The semester is almost over!

To be honest, this semester has sucked. My classes have been hard, I have been constantly stressed out with the impending "post-grad" feeling, and since we haven't really had any breaks this semester it has been hard to stay motivated. I, like most of you probably, have been feeling incredibly burnt out. I'm ready to throw in the towel and try again next semester, but I know that would hurt me rather than help me. Since we are just passing the middle of the semester, I wanted to share a few things that have been keeping me motivated and kept me going!

Remembering My Goals

While you are in school it's hard to lose focus of why you're actually there, which is to earn a degree that will better your future and help you take you down the career path you want to go down. While college is temporary, what you put in is what you get out. It's hard to remember future goals when everything is hard in the present, but your future self will thank you later.

Finding a Strong Support System

Everyone has tough days and on those tough days we all need someone. Whether they are your best friends, people in your class, your family members, you will need people to lean on! It's easier to let people help you rather than take on all your stress by yourself.

Taking Breaks as Needed

One mistake I often make is constantly working until I can't work anymore, but I've found that whenever I take frequent breaks it makes me more productive and makes the work less intimidating. The method that works best for me is working hard for an hour and then taking a 15 minute break.

Acknowledging my Privilege

Growing up, i always thought going to college was something everyone did and was just a part of life but that isn't the case. College is this incredible opportunity that millions of people dream of, and I am lucky enough to go to a college like Mississippi State. There are tons of people all over the world who would kill for my place. That isn't to take away from my feelings of stress or lack of motivation, moreso just to remember that being able to go to college is a privilege. I have this great opportunity and I cannot waste it.

Settling Time Aside for Myself

I believe this is probably one of the most important things that has kept me motivated. Taking time to be by myself to destress from my studies and other engagements helps me stay motivated. There are so many different ways you can take time for yourself. Some people paint, watch TV, read books, or exercise. Some of my favorite ways to destress are riding around listening to my favorite music and watching good movies.

Summer Slump

Summer is a time for fun in the sun, hanging out with friends, and living it up, but for some people, that's not the case. Summer is a nightmare for idle minds. Let me explain what I mean by that. For people with mental illness having the extra time to think and relax can be devastating for their mental health. Now, this isn't a problem for everyone but for some people who suffer from mental illness, this is a reality.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reported that about 35.7% of 12th graders in the U.S. had used marijuana in the past year, and 11.8% reported daily use. As for coming to school under the influence, specific statistics can be hard to come by, but there is concern that the increasing social acceptance of marijuana may lead to higher rates of use among teenagers.
