3 Practical Tips To Start Living A Simpler, More Sustainable Lifestyle

Sustainability and environmentalism can seem like pretty intimidating things. Going Zero-Waste can appear impossible in a consumer-driven world like ours. Changing our diets to veganism can seem too hip and popular to be long lasting. The main purpose of sustainability and environmentalism, however, is to be long lasting! Becoming an environmentalist doesn't need to be scary or intimidating. It just needs to be you. We as humans can be a bit imperfect, but our imperfections are what make us who we are! Perfectionism is just about as long lasting as unsustainable practices, so why not try something a little different than the norm with these three tips?

1. Start small.

The fastest runners in the world at some point or another had to learn to walk. Becoming more environmentally friendly or becoming an environmentalist can seem like quite the daunting task, so start small. The hardest part is to start at all, and you are already doing that! Start with the things that seem like the easiest changes for you and your life. Everyone is different. Our habits, our lives, and our choices all differ from person to person. Some of my favorite small changes are requesting strawless drinks, remembering my reusable bag, and reusing glass jars! Just remember to take it one step at time!

2. Strive for improvement.

Some influencers across Instagram and YouTube have a habit of painting a picture perfect image of environmentalism. It's aesthetic with gorgeous glass jars and farmer's market produce. However, that image is unrealistic for everyone, plus becoming an environmentalist doesn't mean having nothing and loving it! It means making better choices for you and the planet! Start making changes that fit into your world, not the instagramable one! Don't strive for the image, strive for the change!

3. Find the self-love in it.

Everyone's purpose for trying to be more environmentally friendly may be different, but in the end, we all usually have the same underlying purpose. Our purpose is to create a happier, healthier world for us and our planet! In new actions and different choices you get to discover a whole new part of yourself. This part of you thinks a little more consciously and loves the planet a whole lot! Find the parts of being environmentally friendly that you love! Maybe it's the fancy metal straw you can use or watching your own garden grow or watching yourself grow! The power to change the world might seem impossible, but the power to change your world is right in your hands, and that is pretty lovable quality!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
