Starting your first big person job can be pretty terrifying, to say the least. It's time to start applying the knowledge you have gained thus far in college and use it in the real business world. But guess what? Just because you have aced pretty much every class you've ever taken, and you and that 4.0 GPA have landed on the Dean's list time and time again, doesn't actually mean you know jack shit! Don't get me wrong though, the notes you recall from your lectures can definitely help, and the communication and presentation skills you've practiced throughout college will be very handy. But once you enter that corporate office on your very first day, within the hour you will be introduced to an entirely new set of vocabulary, phrases, computer software, and professional etiquette that you had no idea existed. It's intimidating. It's nerve wrecking. It's confusing. Things will run through your head like, "I hope they don't think I'm clueless," "I hope that handshake was okay," "I cannot move in this pants suit," "Don't F*** this up!" However, you should not feel discouraged! After driving yourself crazy for the first couple of days, you will soon come to realize that you had no reason to be scared at all!
Every single one of your fellow employees was a newbie at one stage! From the highest positions in management, and all the way down the ladder, they all had to start somewhere. No one judging you. No one is looking at you thinking "wow this kid has no idea what she's doing." In fact, they are eager and willing to help you! They are excited for you to grow and learn from this experience, whether it's a summer internship or a full-time entry level position. Don't be afraid to take notes, ask questions, share your own ideas, meet new people and ask them for a helping hand! This is your first dive into the real world and the beginning of a possible career for rest of your life! And while nerves are totally normal, go in with confidence and ambition, and have the time of your life at your new job (I know I have so far!)
