How I Met Your Mother Meets College Feels

How "The Slap Bet" Describes College
Wesleyan University

The legendary Slap Bet is the bet made between Marshall and Barney in How I Met Your Mother. I'll save you the details, but here's how each of the eight slaps given represent college.

Slap #1: The slap you brought on yourself.

This slap is for the when you put of the "important" adult things in life; like setting up your own doctor's appointment or watching HIMYM on Netflix instead of doing your final paper.

Slap #2: The slap you get for a terrible performance.

This slap is for those papers that you write an hour before its due at midnight, the tests you didn't study for, and the presentation you stutter through because you didn't practice.

Slap #3: The slap that terrorized you.

This slap is the slap with a countdown. I'm talking about the bane of all college students, procrastination. As the minutes whittle down to the midnight due date, you know you the stinging feeling is coming.

Slap #4: The slap you didn't see coming.

This slap is every assignment you didn't know was due, financial aid bill, and roommate explosion you didn't know was a problem.

Slap #5: The slap you get for making a deal with the devil.

This is the slap you get for bargaining in college, whether with yourself or with your professors. "I'll play Call of Duty for two hours, then I'll do my statistics homework!" It turns into five hours and now it's too late to get anything done. "Can we move the test day to next Tuesday?" When the professor says yes, you probably have three other things due that day.

Slap #6: The slap that shows you karma is real.

This slaps shows you that you get back what you put in. If you didn't study, refer to slap number three. You probably wish that you had given yourself some good karma by getting your work done a week ahead of time.

Slap #7: The slap that holds nothing back.

This slap is the Slap of a Million Exploding Suns, also referred to as Hell Week. Like in the episode, Slapsgiving 3: Slappointment in Slapmarra, this slap has strength, speed, and accuracy. The strength comes from the sheer amount of work you have due; a paper, final project, and regular homework due in every class. Speed comes in when all those assignments were assigned in one day. And accuracy is the most devastating. Every assignment is going to happen to be in a format you hate, group presentations, ten page essays, etc.

Slap #8: The slap that whips you into shape.

This slap is actually a gift in disguise. After being slapped in seven different ways, this is the slap that gets your head in the game. There comes a time where you realize that you need to take on the problems of college and get your shit together.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
