How To Tell If You're The Token Black Person

Most groups have a token, are you it or do you have one?

There is nothing wrong with this at all, it tends to even go unnoticed till someone points it out. Most groups of friends tend to have that one black person in it, now how to tell if you are the token black person in your group.

1. You get upset when you find out your friends have another black friend, not only does this news upset you but you try and best the other black person to remain the number one friend.

2. You tend to disappear in pictures taken, having to make sure you are standing by some form of light so you aren’t a shadow.

Top left corner, you can hardly see the eyes. But you can see the pants.

3. You can count on both hands how many other friends that are black that you have or even know, this isn’t your fault that you tend to be around white people more often.

4. Everyone in your group comes to you so that they can learn to dance, so whenever you do go out dancing it’s spent teaching most of the time.

5. When you go skiing or snowboarding, you tend to be the only black person there, you are literally surrounded by white stuff.

6. When police officers show up all of a sudden to wherever you and your friends are, they all look to you and say "What'd you do?"

7. When the summer nights come and you and your friends go for walks. If you get too far ahead or off the trail the only way your friends will find you is if you are smiling.

8. When there is a pickup game of basketball and you’re sitting there watching, everyone automatically assumes you are good. This is good because you are hardly ever picked last.

9. When you are sitting in your new class on the first day of school and a black person walks in, you glare at them likewise they to you. They then leave the room to transfer to a new class. You then think “That’s right, these are my white people. Go find your own.”

10. A fun game that you do at hockey games is, pointing and counting how many other black people are at the hockey game too.

These are just a handful of funny ways to tell if you are the token black person in your group, or if you have a token black person in your group. Most of us have a token person in our lives, whether its in a group of friends or at work.

Where I grew up this was normal for me. It didn’t bother me at all. I am in a sense colorblind, regardless of what color you are, it doesn't matter to me. All the friends I had and still have to this day don’t care about the color of my skin nor I theirs. We poke fun here and there, but when it comes down to it; it’s about being a good friend and enjoying each other’s company.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
