How To Eat Abroad On A Budget: Sandwich Shop Style

Writing restaurant reviews for Florence has dug up all of these feelings of nostalgia and homesickness. Yet, I cannot stop at just one.

The college student in me is really feeling like tightening up her budget--so we are going to tighten up yours, too.

I work in a study abroad office and you would not believe how many parents will call in and ask about how much their child is going to spend on groceries for the week, month, or semester. Let me tell you this: I do not know! Everything is so dependent on your child's spending and eating habits. I could live off of 20 euro a week while others need 100 euro.

When you are abroad, students get discounts on airfare and museums, but rarely food. So, to help you reign in your budgeting skills, why not get food from a sandwich shop that has a student discount?

SandwiChic was probably my favorite discovery while abroad. Everyone in my apartment building would get a sandwich there and I was a bit skeptical of trying it.

When my second semester in Florence rolled around, one of the students brought me there and suggested the most delicious sandwich that I have ever had. Like ever.

The food was good and the price was even better. For 3.50 euro, you get a sandwich and a bottle of water--students only--and that fills you up.

Personally, I really only ever tried one sandwich here because when you find something you like, why change it? My sandwich consists of finnochiona artigianale, pecorino, and crema di peperoni on focaccia. It’s on this delicious bread and it’s warm and toasty.

The menu is not really a pick-what-you-want-and-pay sort of thing. There are written out choices and you get to try one of the delicious combinations that the sandwich men have designed.

Now, the shop is rather small, but it receives a lot of business from not only students but the locals as well.

Vegetarians beware though: this is probably not a place for you.

They have meat hanging in the window and a glass case full of the meat choices. The spreads are all in jars, available for purchase as well.

For beverages, there is a wide range--water, soda, fruity drinks, and wine. While I stick to the sandwich that I know I enjoy, the men allow you to sample things such as the dip to see if you would like that as a topping.

Some of the other possible sandwiches that you can try are:

Schiacciata farcita con Prosciutto Cotto Nazionale, Mozzarella Fior di latte, Glassa di Aceto Balsamico.

Schiacciata con Capocollo Artigianale, Mozzarella di Bufala Affumicata, Crema di Carciofi.

Multicereali con Mozzarella fiordilatte, pomodoro fresco, Crema di Porri & insalata.

Schiacciata ripiena Prosciutto Cotto, Grana Padano DOP, crema di tartufo, pomodori secchi.

Salame piccante, stracchino artigianale, crema di cavolo nero, pomodori secchi.

Capocollo artigianale, stracciatella, pomodoro fresco e glassa di aceto balsamico.

Salame Artigianale Piccante, Pecorino, Senape di Dijon, Pomodori .

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
