Hooked on Horoscopes? Here's A Quick Guide to Astrology

Some call astrology a pseudoscience, but that's still technically a science, right? The line between becoming an astrology freak and a skeptic is often determined by your feelings about the characteristics of your sun or zodiac sign.

Pretty much everyone knows whether they're an Aquarius or a Gemini, and some people even swear they can tell your sign just by certain aspects of your personality. According to Co — Star "The sun determines your ego, identity, and 'role' in life."

That's because your sun sign is essentially your ego.

So, your sun sign determines your overall personality and it's what you use to get the daily dish on what to expect from the universe when consulting whatever horoscope source you think is best. But there's more to it than that. Not knowing about the other aspects of your natal chart that account for the complexities of your personality may keep you from identifying with your sign and is often what turns people completely off of astrology.

Aside from your sun sign, the other main components of your personality are influenced by the moon and your ascendant sign.

You may know that the moon has pull over the tides, but did you know that it has a pull over you too? The moon rules your emotions, moods, and feelings and is also tied to how you view yourself when you're alone — and it's probably dictated by a sign other than your sun. Your ascendant sign is the one that you most likely come off as to other people.

This is where I think things get interesting and begin to make more sense, but some people either don't know about or find too confusing. Your personality is comprised of a number of (if not all) the signs being expressed in different ways that can be broken down and read to better understand yourself.

Other factors in your natal chart that affect your personality are the organization of signs, planets houses.

While your sun sign might be the most dominant force of your personality, you might also find the qualities of other signs expressed through energy, which are designated by planets, in different areas of your life that are separated into houses. When reading your chart it's possible to see contradicting personality traits through different signs which can account for conflict in certain areas of your life or on your horoscope.

The planets are:

Mercury - communication, intellect, skills

Venus - love, attraction, beauty

Mars - action, aggression, challenges

Jupiter - expansion, optimism, happiness

Saturn - responsibility, restrictions, realities

Uranus - progress, science, innovation

Neptune - dreams, inspiration, imagination

Pluto - power, renewal, resources

The 12 houses are:

1st house - appearance, identity, image

2nd house - money, possession, tools

3rd house - communication

4th house - family, domesticity, security

5th house - romance, creativity, children

6th house - daily routine, service, health

7th house - marriage, partnerships, union

8th house - passion, death, rebirth, soul

9th house - travel, philosophy, education

10th house - fame, achievement, mastery

11th house - goals, friends, high hopes

12th house - sacrifice, solitude, privacy

Maybe it's less science and more fiction, but astrology has proven to be a growing interest for Millennials and members of Gen Z. So the next time someone asks if they can add you on Co — Star, you might bother to actually download it and be able to make sense of your chart.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
