Oh, the joy of a holiday party filled with strangers, friends and family that you may or may not want to talk to. No matter what the party is like, there will always be these people there:

The buffet lurker

Literally me.

The depressed one

Are we at a holiday party or a therapy session?

The one who's had one too much eggnog

Because sometimes holiday parties need to be a little more bearable.

The competitive one

"You only took 15 hours this semester? Yeah, I was in 18..."

The one that doesn't know what do do with himself

So they just stand there.

The judgmental one

I thought my outfit was cute until you gave me that look-over.

The motormouth

Smile and nod. Smile and nod.

The political one

Rule #1 at holiday parties: no politics.

The strangely affectionate one

*hugs for thirty seconds* "Yep, it's good to see you, too, Aunt Karen."

The angry one

The holidays are stressful for everyone. Leave your baggage at the door and have fun!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots.
