So you just had Thanksgiving, and you probably don't even want to look at another turkey, pie, or spoonful of cranberry sauce. But you have so much food leftover, and you don't want it to go to waste! Here are a few ways to mix up the monotony of the holiday-leftover hangover.
1. Make a sandwich.
All that leftover turkey, ham, beef, tofurkey, whatever main dish you eat during the holidays, can be chopped up and placed between two slices of thick bread. A simple yet succulent mid-day munch.
2. Eat it right out of the dish.
At this point, everything has been devoured to the point it is no longer even a full serving size. Just polish off the pan.
3. Make soup.
Meat scraps, bones, and carcasses can be simmered in stock or broth to create a delicious soup or stew.
4. Give it to friends or family.
Once it is time to kick everyone out of your house after the holiday gatherings have concluded, send them on their way with some food. Regardless of whether they eat it or not, it will be out of your house.
5. Give it to charity.
This way, you know your leftovers are not being wasted in the depths of your fridge, but are being put to good use. After all, the holidays are a season for giving.
6. Freeze it for future use.
Granted, not everything will be freezer friendly. But you can save casserole dishes, cookies, cakes, and meat scraps in the freezer. They will keep well enough until you find a need for them in the future (because let's be honest, why waste a perfectly good casserole or cake?).
7. Give it to the dogs.
Even our pooch pals deserve some scraps now and then.
8. Make a buddha bowl.
Combine the healthiest ingredients (i.e. the potatoes, green beans, grains, and meats) into a single dish. Top with some light dressing and let yourself detox from the holiday hangover without wasting leftovers.
9. Put it in the crockpot.
Anything can be tossed into a crockpot and slow-cooked to perfection.
10. Throw it away and never think about another casserole dish again...
...until next holiday.
Next time you shudder at the thought of all the impending holiday leftovers, stop and think a minute about all the exciting combinations and uses for that extra food! Be grateful, give thanks, happy holidays.
