Frank Lopes, better known as Hobo Johnson, came into some popularity when he along with the Lovemakers entered the 2018 Nor Tiny Desk Contest with his single, "Peach Scone". His unique, rapper-esque musical tendencies made for entertaining story-telling and relatable music. In 2017, however, he had already released his debut album, The Rise of Hobo Johnson. His songs are beautifully renditions of ugly circumstances. His lyrics are unapologetically real and deep. In 2019, he realized a second album, The Fall of Hobo Johnso, in which he continued to address day-to-day life and the struggles it brings.
His songs are raw, often hilarious takes on life and living:"Creve Coeur 1", a song from his first album, deals with the emotions of a woman trying to understand life and love after bitter betrayal by her father."She holds her breath all day and f*****g gasps for air at night."
"Always feel so lonely knowing that nothing forever lasts forever."
"Peach Scone" his iconic single, breaks down the relationship between a friend-zoned man and his object of affection as she deals with relationship issues.
"And I love the thought of being with you, or maybe it's the thought of not being so alone. The second one is way sadder than the first, but I don't know."
"Brush me off like the dust on Jay-Z's shoulders. So, I fall to the ground, collect myself , and get ready to take over your heart... or at least your spare time."
" Subaru Crosstrek XV" the fifth song on his second album is a comical account of life as a young adult.
"I just bought a Subaru Crosstrek, I woulda bought a Lambo, but I'm not quite there yet."
"One time, I tried to burn sage to clear the vibeBut the smoke alarm went off, and my ex-girl cried... She cried for a bunch of different reasons..."
"Father" deals with family relationships and fatherly advice in a comical way.
" Son, you'll never dunk. It's family tradition basketball is not for us."
"Son, beware of the monsters that roam the depths of your head. Sometimes, they'll make you real sad, or real, real mad or real, real jealous."
All in all, Hobo Johnson is on to something big, and, in my opinion, it's something great. He's just the dose of reality we needed in the music industry. and the realease of The Fall of Hobo Johnson was just what I needed in my life. So thanks Frank, and, for the record, I am glad your name isn't Blake.
