Recently, I found myself watch High School Musical on Netflix (great movie), and found myself asking the question "If the East High basketball team was real, would they even be that good?"
The conclusion I came to was absolutely not. Just from watching the entire HSM trilogy you can tell this team winning the New Mexico State championship three times was an absolute joke and a half.
First off, from my analysis, the state of New Mexico is absolute trash at basketball. Seeing that they have only had seven players born in their state go pro, the competition is not that difficult. While this bodes well for the Wildcats, it also shows how bad they are.
Considering in the third movie, they find themselves with an extremely large deficit in the championship game, and needed a miracle to come back, the conclusion can be made that the Wildcats competition merely made them look good.
Secondly, their team has absolutely no size. This past weekend I found myself watching an actual state basketball tournament, and each team in the tournament had someone with size. It's absolutely imperative to a team's success in my opinion. For instance, in a few of the basketball scenes in HSM, you can see Troy playing in the post. While that's not unheard of for point guards, it certainly is tough. The way Troy seems to get buckets in the post would not happen in real life, considering the fact that he is 5'8 and has a minimal vertical jump, he would most likely get destroyed in any kind of paint play.
Another observation that I found is that the Wildcats are not a good team. Meaning that they don't have any sort of depth beyond Troy, Chad and Zeke, all of which are perimeter players. This is evidence enough when Troy gives up the game winner in HSM 3 to Rocket Man. Rocket Man literally catches Troy's pass and stares at the ball, almost like he's never seen a basketball before. If I were a West High player, you know that ball is going into the fifth row as soon as Rocket Man decides that he wants to shoot.
Lastly, if it were real, this team spends no time working on actual basketball stuff. All they do is pull pranks and dance. I'm no coach, but if you're playing basketball, shouldn't you be focusing on you know, basketball? Maybe it's just me, but I feel like perhaps there could be more time being put in on the court itself.
Of course, all of this is fake, and a continuous run of hot takes, but let's be real, this team is quite horrible. Sorry, East High, but you guys are the worst state champs I've ever seen.
