Whether you're a die-hard fan of all things Magnolia or you just manage to catch the occasional Fixer Upper episode, Chip and Joanna Gaines' new-ish book is a must-read.
From the very first page, the couple's unique (and endearing) story capture's the reader's heart in the way that only a non-fiction tale can. Joanna's 'play-it-safe' mentality is one that feels all too natural, as does her open, generous heart, something that's been nourished by her playful, adventurous husband. Chip and JoJo (as he affectionately calls his wife) chronicle their young lives, all the way through their educational years at Baylor University, leading to their chance meeting in JoJo's dad's auto shop. From there, their story blossoms (pardon the Magnolia pun) with the beautifully raw moments we've come to love from the sweet couple. Don't expect the crafting of a novel here, expect a courageously authentic narrative, with both of its protagonists sharing the darkest, ugliest moments of life, both in their independent young lives and their marriage.
The way the two discuss their faith is exceptionally lovely, giving a candid account of their God and his faithfulness in The Magnolia Story, extending to their purchase of the twin silos that have become as much their trademark as the magnolia blossom.
Warning, some spoilers ahead!
You'll cringe for Chip as he shows up over an hour late for their first date (and proceeds to not call again for two months).
You'll cry along with Joanna as the couple enters their first home together, the day after their honeymoon, with the stench, the shut-off electricity, and Chip suggests that they sleep on the floor in the heat.
You might even giggle as Chip brings home animal after animal (to Jo's utter frustration).
But, you will definitely cheer as Joanna, several anniversaries after their wedding, refuses to 'upgrade' her engagement diamond, choosing to stay with the small stone Chip purchased when they were just starting out.
Overall, the Gaines family's triumphs will warm hearts, and their trials allow their readers to relate to their refreshing authenticity.
