Kenneka Jenkins was a 19-year-old that was found dead inside of the freezer of the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Chicago on September 10th after attending a party there with her friends.
At 1:36 a.m. on September 9th a livestream video was started on Facebook where a woman is seen talking to the camera. In the reflection of her sunglasses, Jenkins can be seen sitting. Many people believe that she can be heard saying "Help me" in the video, and that the music was then turned up in the video to hide the fact that she was being harmed.
There was also been some speculation going around social media that Jenkins was raped and then murdered, but it has yet to be announced by the police what happened on the night of her death.
Teresa Martin, Jenkins' mother, believes that her daughter was murdered as well. When she spoke to NBC Chicago, she said
"I have an idea that something might have happened. I believe it was foul play involved."
Martin also doubted the police's claims that her daughter opened the doors to the freezer on her own because of how heavily intoxicated she was. The hotel surveillance video from 3:20 a.m. on September 9th shows Jenkins staggering near the front desk because she was drunk, and Marin believes that if her daughter had been strong enough to open the double steel doors to the freezer, she would have been strong enough to walk straight.
#KennekaJenkins trended on Twitter and helped spread the theory that she had been raped on the night of her death. Even though the tag was mostly filled with people expressing their shock over the situation, there were others that stated that she should have been more careful with picking her friends. While it is true that parents should teach their children to be careful of who they spend their time with, the blame should not be put on the victim. This is a classic example of rape culture.
Jenkins would have been the one to have gotten her trust violated by her friends if she was in fact raped and murdered, but somehow the crimes that were committed against her would have been her fault. Instead of shaming women that have been raped for supposedly being careless, how about we teach our friends and family to not be rapists.
I have seen posts on Twitter where men have referred to photos of Jenkins and claimed that if she dressed less provocatively, her alleged rape and murder could have been avoided. This is another instance of society showing how little it cares about the welfare of women.
We are seen as objects that can be abused and thrown out like meaningless garbage, and if anyone tries to seek justice for how someone has been harmed, the world immediately puts the blame on the victim for tempting their rapist. How Jenkins chose to dress on the night of her death is irrelevant because no outfit justifies rape.
If it turns out that Jenkins was raped by someone at the party, then her and her family deserve out support in making sure that the rapist is punished. Her family especially needs us to be on their side because Martin has already explained to reporters that the police were not much help when she initially suspected that her daughter was in danger. They did not take her concerns seriously, and she believes that if they had, they might have found her daughter alive.
