Here we go again, another celebrity who has been ignorant and decides that it would be cool to be bold and put themselves in groups that were not meant for them. This week it's Hannah Brown, who's claim to fame was being the girl power independent southern sweetheart from the Bachelorette's previous season, hasn't done anything else since. Now Hannah has never been someone who gets in trouble other than being careless during the beginning of the pandemic. She thought it would be cool to go on live to her 3 million Instagram followers and sing the lyrics to "Rockstar" by Da Baby. She sang the lyrics and uttered the N word with the -er. She then proceeds to laugh it off and blames her brother in the background. Now this would have gone away quietly over the weekend and no one would notice but she released a tone death apology to her instagram stories which got people's attention. So right now we have people split, half want Hannah to give a formal apology while others believe people are reading too much into it.
Now for Bachelor Nation, they'll give her the pass and defend her. The whole stan culture surrounding that show is full of racism. If you remember from The Women Tell All this past season on the Bachelor, the minority contestants got the brunt of the media to hate from fans and attack their race because they didn't like how they looked or acted on the show. I say this so many times; you're not a real fan if you can't hold them accountable. If you are not someone who has been oppressed, endured racism, or has brown skin, you have no right to be the defense lawyer for Hannah. So stop with the #IStandwithHannah, the girl is a grown woman and has not been through any form of oppression that Ahmaud Arbrey had to go through, it's ridiculous and stupid to try to act like she's the victim in this instance.
Everyone continues to ask, "Well, why can't I say it?" "Rappers use it in their songs" " Black people have endured the history of the word and until you are called this at school, your place of work, in public, and in your face by someone with the intent to belittle you, sit down and shut up. Why do you want o say the word so bad? Do you feel empowered being able to say it? Do you feel like you're in your ancestor's' shoes in 2020 where everyone can co-exist without having to be whipped and chained, and you get to wear the field walker's hat? Do you want to feel cool around black people and think you get a pass because you have black friends, work with someone who's black, your boyfriend is black, or your in-law is black? No, you do not get a pass. No, you do not understand the history of the word. No, it's not a cool slang word you can get away with saying because you wanted to feel included.
Now here's my message to Hannah. As a white woman with privilege, you have the education and resources to know why this word is not be said, especially by white people. If you can get on camera and say this word, you can get on camera and state how you messed up and why you need to educate yourself to be better. I'm not saying Hannah is a racist, but she has been ignorant and in her bubble of never having to endure any form of consequence, oppression, or accountability. Give the same energy that you gave Gina Rodriguez last year to Hannah Brown, an Alabama native who has been privileged and chooses to be tone death and think her celebrity status gives her a pass for offending a whole race.
