Have you ever sat there and thought about how weird the concept of Halloween actually is? It obviously changes a lot over the years.
When you're little it's all about mom and dad dressing you up in the cutest outfit around. I would know because one year I was a ladybug. Another year I was a flower and let me tell you, that was hands down the cutest costume around. At this stage, Halloween is mostly for the parents. They get so much satisfaction out of making their kids look ridiculously cute while their young because that stage doesn't last very long.
Oh, and don't even get me started on the Halloween parties we had in school. Those were hands down the best days. There was nothing better than getting out of class to pass out candy and play spooky games while in costumes. Ahh, those were the days.
Then you grow up just a little bit and for the boys, it becomes being as scary as possible. The girls lean more towards to prettier, more princess-like costumes. Every girl goes through that phase where they want to wear makeup and look like a princess so what better way to do that than dressing up as something magical for Halloween?
And then we all sadly make it to high school where we aren't really sure if it's acceptable to continue going trick-or-treating. Some still went, some ended up handing out candy. Well, when I say handing out candy, I mean eating half of the candy while handing out the rest. The most awkward encounters were when you would see people you knew from school that were trick-or-treating and part of you was like, "wait you're way too old to be trick-or-treating." The other part of you was like, "oh my gosh. Someone else please answer the door."
Then you make it to college and you suddenly become more excited for Halloween than ever before. Halloweekend is like 3 nights of Christmas morning. And it's not that we are excited about the candy. We are excited to dress up with our group of friends and go out. The concept of Halloween suddenly becomes partying in an outfit that is perfectly acceptable for the night no matter what you're dressing up as.
Halloween is still such a weird holiday. I'm not even sure it can be considered a holiday because adults still go to work and kids still go to school so it can't be that big of a deal, right? As time goes on and on, Halloween becomes more about the memories. The memories of dressing up as a lady bug and flower, to dressing up as a witch and a news reporter, to handing out the candy, and well, college. It's a concept that changes so much throughout the years but looking back, I have come to the conclusion that Halloween is all about the memories.
