I've Always Wanted To Go To Med School And 'Grey’s Anatomy' Inspired Me To Be A Future Surgeon

Inspiration is the backbone of a driven individual. Having the passion and drive to become a surgeon requires inspiration. As for me, “Grey's Anatomy" became one of my inspirations. I always possessed the capabilities to pursue medicine but I lacked the confidence. There isn't a doctor in my family that I could look up to so I had to find my drive from elsewhere. The show “Grey's Anatomy" has held a special place in my heart since the first episode. I feel personally connected to the protagonist Meredith Grey, as she has faced a lot of challenges in her career path. It made me believe that despite everything I have faced, that I was still worthy of practicing medicine.

Growing up, I was always so sure of myself and everything I've wanted to accomplish. I excelled in academics and loved science. It wasn't until high school when I lost sight of myself and struggled with confidence issues. I still managed to maintain a relatively high GPA, but college wasn't as simple. My inner struggles became an everyday battle and I began to lose my motivation. During this time, I stayed inside a lot. I began watching “Grey's Anatomy" and at first it was painful. The show was portraying surges I had only dreamed of performing. I remember thinking how badly I wanted that for myself.

It didn't happen overnight, but I slowly started seeing myself change. My motivation came back all because I started watching this TV show out of sheer coincidence. Every day I pushed myself until I saw the change I wanted to see. I could finally see the light in my eyes again. I worked hard last semester and got the grades I always knew I was capable of receiving.

Medical school is a dream of mine. I feel as though “Grey's Anatomy" worked hard to accurately portray what students go through. If it was easy, everyone would become a doctor. My connection to the show and its characters was vital in my life. I truly felt understood and empowered. My fears and challenges were put at ease as I watched the characters evolve through their personal struggles. I have learned to accept that humans are designed to be flawed. The mistakes we make are what makes us human. My weaknesses have become my strengths.

I am forever changed by “Grey's Anatomy." I have found the motivation within myself to continue pursuing my dreams. Becoming a surgeon will take sacrifices and dedication but will be rewarding. My natural abilities to connect with people is an important quality to possess as a doctor and will take me far. My passion to heal people and understand them has driven me to become a surgeon. I one day hope to change lives.

As Cristina Yang beautifully said, “Have some fire. Be unstoppable. Be a force of nature," and that's exactly what I plan on doing.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
