The opening of the movie begins with a gadget salesman named Ran Peltzer who is looking for an extraordinary gift. He goes to Chinatown in search for this special Christmas gift for his son Billy. Ran Peltzer notices a furry creature inside an old shop. The elderly proprietor refuses to sell the creature, but his teenage grandson, knowing that their family also was desperate for money, sold the creature to Rand without his grandfather's knowledge or consent. The "mogwai" is given to Ran with the warning to never expose him to bright light, water, or to feed him after midnight.
Rand decides to give his son Billy "Gizmo" a few days early before Christmas. Fortunately, Rand remembers to tell his son the three rules: The creature does not like bright light and will be killed by sunlight. They must never give the creature any water, either to drink or a bath. Most importantly they must never feed it after midnight. The next day, Billy sees his friend Pete, and they play with Gizmo, but Pete accidentally knocks over a glass of water and gets Gizmo wet. Gizmo goes into convulsions and five tiny furballs pop out of his back. The furballs grow, and a few minutes later, they develop into creatures just like Gizmo. Now this is where the story get's interesting. These little creatures are nothing like Gizmo. Although they have similar appearance's, these creatures are very mischievous, cruel, and they are violent. As a result, Billy and Gizmo have to fight these evil creatures and put an end to all the destruction throughout the film.
This movie is one of my all time favorite classic movies to watch during the holidays. It's by no means a masterpiece, but Gizmo is just such a lovable character that in the end of the film you begin to fall in love with him. It may be because of his charisma, his dancing, quirkiness, and a handful of other things. All I know is that whenever I hear him hum that mystical tune during the movie I start to hum it myself.
One of my favorite scenes from the movie is when Gizmo dresses up as Rambo and he puts on his little red bandana. He's so cute and I wish these "Mogwai" were real. I guess that I really love furry creatures that can keep you company and hang around with you. This movie does all that and captures brilliantly what it feels to have a pet.
Another one of my favorite scenes is when Gizmo starts dancing in the lab and how he shakes his hips like Elvis. It one of my all time favorite scenes and I included it for all of you to witness. Gremlins is an imaginative tale that truly redefines what a great horror comedy movie should be like. It has this 80s type of feel like the Goonies and it's a movie that I can rewatch over and over again because of this. I hope you also get the chance to see it as well.
