The Grammys have always been an iconic way to honor music throughout the years. I, for one, watch the Grammys almost every year unless for some reason I'm not home. For whatever reason it feels like the Grammys get more disappointing every year. Maybe it's because the performances get weaker every year or maybe it's that artists who deserve all the awards they're nominated for walk out with a couple to none. Also, the Grammys are so predictable, the artists who win, win every year.
It's starting to feel like it's less about the music and more about the ridiculous outfits and the potential drama. Also, some of the nominations just didn't make any sense.
While looking at the nominees list, there were a few things that caught my eye. Anyone who knows me knows I love Lana Del Rey so as expected, I'm ecstatic to see her nominated but I wasn't expecting a pop nomination. Her album "Lust for Life" is nominated for best pop vocal album but Lana isn't pop so of course this came as a surprise to me. I would understand Lana's debut album, "Born to Die" being nominated for this but "Lust for Life" is so nostalgic of the 60s/70s that it couldn't be any further from a pop album.
Also, can i just say, why are TWO rap albums nominated for album of the year? We didn't need to nominate both Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar for this award. It pretty much guarantees that "Melodrama" by Lorde stands no chance. Also, even with all the love I have for Childish Gambino, his latest album "Awaken, My Love!" does not deserve a nomination for best album. The only song that did considerably well on that album was "Redbone" but every other song is far too abstract for everyday music listeners.
Also, why is "Issues" by Julia Michaels nominated for song of the year? There are so many songs much more deserving of this award like "Shape of You" or "Look What You Made Me Do". Even though I have a very low tolerance for Taylor Swift's music and behavior, I still think she deserves it over Julia Michaels. Who is Julia Michaels? I'd much rather vote for an artist who has a career that proves their artistry over a one hit wonder.
I'd also like to know why Dua Lipa wasn't nominated for best new artist when "New Rules" is a much better song than "Issues."
Of course I respect every artist that was nominated for a Grammy because that means they must be doing something right. In my opinion, the nominations for next year are super weak. However, other people are probably excited over the fact that Jay-Z's "The Story of O.J." got nominated for record of the year, meanwhile all I want to see is an unexpected artist like Lorde walk home with the awards she deserves.
