The Good and Bad of August

The best and worst month of them all.

August, the eighth month of the year. For me, this month is both the best and the worst of them all. There is good and bad to almost everything in life, and here they are for August:

It's Still Summer

First, let's start out with the positives. Although August is seen as the last month of summer, technically it's still summer until late September. August is the perfect time to fit in all the activities you never got to do in the previous two months of summer. It's like the last hoorah, but in a good way.

The Feast

If you live in Boston, you're familiar with the Feasts that take place in the North End. Although they run all throughout the summer, the best ones are in August: the Fisherman's Feast, The Madonna, and Saint Anthony's Feast.

It's Still (Kind Of) Acceptable To Drink During Weekdays

A glass of wine or two is always acceptable during your meal at any given time, but drinking the whole bottle on a Tuesday night may not be the best... unless it's summer of course, and you don't have to work the next day.

Beach Hair

In the summer, I never do my hair. I just let it air dry and do it's own thing. It may get a little frizzy, but who cares? It's more socially acceptable to have your hair in a messy bun or frizzy waves when it's this hot out. (I still do it in the cold months though.)

My Birthday

August 23rd, the first day of Virgo season and my birthday! I'll be 22 this year, but don't even think about singing Taylor Swift to me.

And now, for the negatives...

Last Month Of Summer

As mentioned before, at least it's still summer, but I know at least I'm going to miss the warm weather. Another summer almost over.

It Gets Dark Sooner

One of my favorite things about summer is that it stays light out until about 8:00pm. When the fall and winter approach, it's pitch dark out by 5. Boo!

Back To The Cold

Autumn

Sure, autumn is beautiful and we all love our flannels, but when it starts getting freezing out, that's when I have a problem.

No More Tan

I love being tan. It brings out my freckles, makes me feel good, and I think tan lines are cute! But now with the last month of summer and no more hot beach days pretty soon, I go from Snooki to Casper the Friendly Ghost.

My Birthday

I love and hate my birthday. I love it because it's my special day, but I also hate it because I'm another year older and that means I have to adult. Turning 21 was fun and stuff, but what's so special about 22? I hope you're not still thinking about Taylor Swift.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
