Yes, I Might Be A Girl, But That Doesn't Mean I'm A Girly-Girl

Being a girl shouldn't label you as a girly-girl.

Yes, I might be a girl however, that doesn’t make me a girly-girl. What is a girly-girl you might ask? Well a girly-girl is girl or a woman who chooses to dress and behave in a feminine style. For example, wearing pink, perfume, makeup, dressing in skirts, dresses, and blouses. They talk about relationships along with doing activities associated with the traditional gender role of a girl.

Growing up, I was always outside hanging out with the boys. Mind you I did wear dresses when I was younger, every Sunday I wore a dress to go to church. After we got home, I wanted to go right outside and play in the dirt. Sometimes, I didn’t even want to change out of the dress. I just wanted to go right out and play.

I was the girl who was friends with mostly guys than girls. Mind you I do have my girly-girl moments, but I do consider myself as a tomboy girl. I played sports, I wore mostly jeans, sweats, and sneakers and you would always find my hair up. However, I do wear shorts in the summer, I recently feel more comfortable wearing dresses again, I wear flip-flops in the summer, and I wear perfume.

With sports you think girls would mostly be interested in the easy sports because they are afraid of getting hurt, they might break a nail, or, they worry about what their hair might look like. They normally go for dance, gymnastics, ballet, or cheerleading. For me I played soccer, volleyball, and I did a little softball for awhile.

When it comes to dance I can’t dance. I love dancing but I can only do line dancing and I never understood ballet or cheerleading, but I do love watching cheerleading movies like, “Bring It On.”

Now when it comes to the really girly-girl items like makeup, I never got into it. I only wore mascara when I went to my school dances during my freshman year of high school, but after getting into my sophomore year I didn’t want to wear it anymore. I wear glasses and it would always smudge so I no longer wanted to deal with it. I also never really understood the point in makeup, I mean I do but I don’t at the same time. I don’t understand the different colors for skin types. Honestly, I just don’t understand anything about it and frankly, I don’t want to either. Sorry.

I do wear perfume, because like I said before, I am a girl and I do like to smell good. However, I don’t know many brands and I mostly just go by how they smell. If I like the smell the smell of it, I buy it. I mostly shop at Bath and Body works.

Now when it comes to the color pink, I can’t stand it. I honestly hate the color pink. Yes, I did wear it when I was younger, but now you won't catch me wearing pink. Pink is truly my least favorite color, it’s under black on my list. My two favorite colors are purple and light blue.

I do talk about relationships, I mean come on who doesn’t? I talk about guys with my friends and I would talk about whatever issues I have with people I know. For me, talking about a relationship isn’t considered a girly-girl thing, I feel like it’s a human thing. However, that is just me.

Now don’t get me wrong I don’t hate girly-girls, I think they are cool. I do have friends who associate with the girly-girl stereotype but not to the full extent. I have friends who wear makeup and who wear dresses (more than me). However, when I think of the stereotypical girly-girl, I think of Sharpay Evans for High School Musical. Thankfully, I don't know anyone as bad as Sharpay Evans.

Now I guess you can say that I am a girl of both traits. You will just have to get to know me to see who I truly am. Now I must ask you… are you a girly-girl? A tomboy? Or somewhere inbetween?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
