Let's face it: girls judge girls. We see someone with the body of a model and we instantly look at ourselves and point out our flaws.
Do you ever have days when you want to just lay in bed, burn your closet, and never see people again? Same girl, I have them more often than I want to admit.
Finding our "fit" can be tough. We don't always remember that everyone has their own body shape, their own version of healthy, and their own challenges. I am not built to wear a size 2 — I never will be built to wear a size 2 or even a 4. I know what my version of healthy is and I also know that it is 100% different than every other girl's.
Competing in pageants is something that most people see as a negative effect on body image, but I see it as a positive. I found myself through pageantry and I have found where I want to be in life.
Miss North Dakota and the Miss America competition have a 'Lifestyle and Fitness' portion of their shows. It was always a common thought that you needed to be a size 2 in order to compete or even come close to winning the crown. That is so far from the truth in today's Miss America.
I found my fit through lifting, cardio, counting macros, and leaning on my friends and family. Changing your lifestyle for the better isn't something you should have to do alone. This is a time to celebrate yourself, your growth, self-love, and confidence.
Taking time to find yourself and become the person you've always wanted to be is nothing to be ashamed of. Say it loud and proud for everyone to see. Post it on social media, talk about it with family and friends. Whatever helps you, do that.
Finding my fit started out as a way to prep for Miss North Dakota, but I found myself wanting more. I wanted something I could hold onto as a forever lifestyle and something that made my life easier.
Days were hard: I didn't always hit my macros, I didn't always push myself in the gym, and I wasn't letting myself grow in ways that I knew I needed to. I was holding back what I had been searching for and I was only letting myself down. I started by slowly becoming more.
This journey is different for everyone. No two paths are going to ever be the same.
If you're struggling to find your own version of 'fit,' know this fact: "To find who you are and what you want to be, you must be willing to do the impossible. Climb the highest mountains and fall into the deepest valleys. You are worth fighting for, you are worth trying the impossible."
