This Is Literally A Comprehensive Breakdown Of G-Eazy's "The Beautiful & Damned"
G-Eazy's Facebook

If I'm honest, the best way for me to start this is to go ahead and address that I am a HUGE G-Eazy fan. I'm not going to act like I'm not, or act like this is an unbiased article. Anyone who knows me knows that I own every single song. I'm talking down to the mixtapes, people. I also will not say I am an accredited reviewer on music... because I'm not. But I am a music enthusiast & like to share that with others.

Onto Gerald's album... The Beautiful & Damned.

This is his fourth studio album, that followed his well-known album "When It's Dark Out," which pushed his fame up higher. This album takes a little bit of a different approach in my opinion. And with it having been about a month since it was released, I've decided to talk about each of the songs a little to give a little taste of each, while also hoping to help anyone who has considered listening to this album figure out which songs they would vibe with the most.

Track 1: The Beautiful & Damned
Nothing stops Gerald from getting right to the point with his title track. He starts it right. Talking on the fame, fortune and struggles that he he goes through in this life he has created for himself. Setting the theme for this album.

Track 2: Pray for Me
This song is catchy, but also feels like it was made to be a “turn-up” type of song to play in the clubs, which a lot of artists are putting out nowadays, so it’s understandable… but it doesn’t feel as authentic as G-Eazy fans have come to know and love about him.

Track 3: Him & I
This is Bonnie & Clyde. This is urban rap. This is smooth city vibed hip-hop. It is honestly my favorite song on the album. Gerald and Halsey are the perfect duo… on and off the track. They both have spoken about this song being pure and real between the two of them, which is clear to anyone who has watched the music video.

Track 4: But A Dream
This song follows the theme he starts with in track one. It holds onto the “self-made” vibe that it is supposed to take on with a self-reflection. It’s not so hostile as When It’s Dark Out was but more along the lines of his These Things Happen album.

Track 5: Sober
I will admit this is probably one of my most played songs from this album. But it’s not because of the lyrics… it’s because of the beat and smoothness of the song. I’ve gotten tired of rap just talking about alcohol, drugs, women, and sex… which this song is basically all about. But the mixture of Gerald and Charlie Puth works really well together.

Track 6: Legend
Okay honestly, some people have said this song is an empty song. In my opinion, it may not have any deep meanings… but it is an extremely entertaining song. I happen to be a fan of when G-Eazy makes random little sound effects within a song and this song is filled with them. I jam this song in my car when I just want to turn it up and enjoy myself.

Track 7: No Limit
This is probably the most famous song off of this album. Since the day it was released, it caught on everywhere. And of course with him featuring A$AP Rocky & Cardi B in it… it definitely set this up for a turn-up song that will play at clubs and parties for years.

Track 8: The Plan
I would say that this song has the hostile vibe When it’s Dark Out gave that I spoke about in my "But a Dream" description. It’s definitely a song that hypes up a “determination” feeling that one may need in the gym or with their career. Just speaking about how it’s “the plan.”

Track 9: That’s A Lot
Okay ummm.. this is probably my least played song out of all of them. If I'm 100% real with you all, It kind of feels like a filler song.

Track 10: Pick Me Up
This song is extremely smooth but comes off as a song basically about drugs. I think what makes it so smooth is his feature of Anna of the North singing the chorus.

Track 11: Gotdamn
This song holds onto the idea of trap music in 2017. It’s not that it’s a bad song, it just comes off as something you’d hear other overplayed rappers do. It’s not a dark G-Eazy song. And it’s definitely not a deep song… which doesn’t work too well with where it is placed, being in the second half of this album, because the second half of this album gets into more deeper songs.

Track 12: Leviathan
I absolutely love this song, from the beat to the lyrics. Everything about it. When Gerald speaks it comes off sexy… in my opinion. But I do wish this song would have been placed in the first half of this album because it could still be a part of the more club-vibes that the first half gives vs. what the second half offers.

Track 13: Crash & Burn
This song features Kehlani, and I believe these two make great music together. This song is “pre-hype G-Eazy;” plain and simple. It pulls from his past while also speaking about the moment he is living in right now. Classic G-Eazy.

Track 14: Summer in December
He has talked about how this song is deep and a personal song, and that is exactly what you get when you listen to it. It gives his listeners a view from the inside… inside the life that everyone seems to want but shows how it is actually a harder reality that is constantly filled with pressure.

Track 15: Charles Brown
This song sticks with what Gerald, Jay Ant, and E-40 know best… the Bay Area roots. It gives a calm and nice break in the album but also feels like it is exactly where it is supposed to be in the album. It’s always a great time to hear G & E-40 together.

Track 16: No Less
This song is sweet, smooth, and one of my favorites. I’d say this is one of those songs that girls listen to and wish a guy would feel about and give this to them. I wish he would have given a few more songs like this. It’s real and true while also gentle.

Track 17: Momma Always Told Me
The song compliments the previous song in the sense of Gerald asking his lover for his chance to prove his worthiness for her affection and time. This song sounds completely authentic in the lyrics.

Track 18: Fly Away
This song talks about how Gerald doesn’t feel good enough for the woman he is with and wants her to move on without him because he feels that he and his problems are too much and she deserves more. I'm pretty positive this song is based on his ex from back home, Devon.

Track 19: Love is Gone
This song digs deeper into the issues going on in today's world with lines like,

"Until we all love each other nobody benefits. Minorities and feminists, trans, gays, and immigrants. The government mix politics and religiousness. So a man's body's more free than a woman's is. The anger is real, the riots are limitless. And nothing's gonna change 'til we killing off all this ignorance."

He takes advantage of his platform to touch on things that we all are living with and insisting things need to change. It’s emotionally heavy and could have honestly finished up as the final song of the album.

Track 20: Eazy
Anyone who listens to G-Eazy knows that he always has a deep, vulnerable song in each album. In These Things Happen it was “Opportunity Cost,” which spoke about the things he gave up to get to where he is and finishes off with a voicemail from his mom.

In When It’s Dark Out it was “Everything Will Be OK,” which talks about the people he grew up with and what they said, his mom and his brother, and about the woman his mother loved (who he also walked in on having overdosed and he speaks of it in the song).

So with that being said, the lyrics in this song are Gerald speaking to himself at 14, 21, and more recently. It lets you in on his life more. It's open and deep.

This album has had a lot of hard work put into it and it is clear to see. For anyone who has debated on checking this album out, go for it. You won't be disappointed. You'll find something of your liking on it. This album is compelling and gripping.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
