Who doesn’t love comedy? Whether it be a TV show, a movie or stand-up special, you can always count on comedy to take your mind off the unimportant things like work or school, and really focus on just having a good laugh.
The only real issue I have with comedy is that the industry is dominated by men. Not to say male comedians aren’t funny, I just can’t #relate to them like I can with female comedians. Females are grossly underrepresented in the industry, and though there are some who receive recognition, there are so many more to celebrate! Here are five of my favorite underrated female comedians:
1. Georgia Hardstark
Georgia got her start in comedy on the Food Network, as the co-star of her own show called “Drinks with Alie and Georgia.” She is also the co-creator and co-host of the podcasts “Slumber Party with Alie & Georgia” and “My Favorite Murder.”
2. Jessica Williams
Jessica is a former senior correspondent from “The Daily Show” and made her mark as the youngest correspondent ever on the show. Jessica recently starred in her own Netflix movie “The Incredible Jessica James” and is the co-creator and co-host of the podcast “2 Dope Queens.”
3. Karen Kilgariff
Karen is a hilariously sarcastic comedian who was the first ever head comedy writer for “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” Today, you can find Karen as the co-creator and co-host of the podcasts “Do You Need a Ride?” and “My Favorite Murder.”
4. Michelle Buteau
Michelle is a stand-up comedian who has toured throughout the United States and has made many appearances on Late Night shows such as “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson” and “Last Comic Standing.” She is also the co-host of VH1’s “Big Morning Buzz” and currently plays the character of Private Robinson on FOX’s series “Enlisted.”
5. Phoebe Robinson
Phoebe showcased her comedic writing skills as a staff writer for MTV’s “Girl Code” when she was first beginning in comedy and is now the co-creator and co-host of the podcast “2 Dope Queens." Phoebe is also the creator and host of the podcast “Sooo Many White Guys” which is a podcast in response to the predominance of white males in comedy, featuring guests who are mostly non-white and non-male, how fitting!
So what are you waiting for? Go appreciate these fabulous, hilarious women and get to laughing!
