Fruit... nature's "surprise inside!"

I wouldn't have believed you if you told me, but cutting fruits and preparing them for snacking or eating can be pretty stress-relieving. I could honestly just prep fruit for hours on end, and there are so many fruits out there beyond just apples and bananas. It sounds really simple, but do you know what the inside of a papaya looks like? When is the last time you personally cut open a cantaloupe? Is there even a way to definitively know what color the inside of your dragonfruit will be?

Not only is it a good way to de-stress, but when you're done, you've got a healthy snack ready to pop in your lunch bag, a ready-to-eat dessert for later, or the makings for a delicious party tray. Some of these are not found at every store, or may be more scarce at various times during the year, so it may be a bit of a scavenger hunt. However, some of these are in-season, such as pomegranates (because I just bought one and added a video at the end!)

That said, below are some of the most "fun" fruits to grab on your next grocery trip.

1. Grapes

Grapes are a fun on-the-go snack as is, but there are so many varieties out there, such as cotton candy grapes, or different-shaped "moon drops," "tear drops," or "witch fingers."

2. Cantaloupe

While cantaloupes can look as intimidating to open as a coconut, they actually aren't that hard to open. Once you get it open, you can scrape the soft center with the seeds out with a knife or spoon, then dice the rest of the fruit insides up, or eat straight out of the rind. Plus, so often cantaloupe is primarily served already diced, but the taste is a lot fresher straight from the fruit.

3. Watermelon

Watermelon may be disappearing from stores soon, as it is primarily a summer food, but if you can find any still lingering around, enjoy this last taste of summer. As pictured above, you can poke a popsicle stick into the rind and enjoy as a watermelon-sicle. Close your eyes and imagine that it's not 40 degrees outside.

4. Mango

Surely you've seen those mango-street-vendor videos on Facebook already. Apparently, turning a mango into a beautiful piece of artwork is a thing, so why not try it for yourself? Poke a skewer (like what they make kabobs with) into the bottom of the mango, peel the outside, then (carefully) sculpt your mango into whatever flour or creation you imagine.

5. Papaya

I opened up a papaya (the larger fruit pictured above), not dissimilar to this one, and I was taken aback. To start, the fruit sliced like butter; it was so smooth. Then, I found these bold little seeds in the middle. I simply scooped the little seeds out, and there was something so oddly satisfying about the whole thing.

I couldn't believe I had never actually seen the inside of a papaya before, but it is incredibly interesting if you've never had this experience.

6. Starfruit

Did you know there is a star-shaped fruit? It's a starfruit (what a concept)! I tried a starfruit several years ago, and it was quite delicious, like almost a mild pineapple flavor. I've been on the hunt ever since, so if you happen to come across a starfruit, do not pass up the opportunity.

7. Rambutan

No, this is not a fancy eos lip balm. This is a fruit called rambutan, and they have been spotted at our local Walmart before! The fruit is an interesting texture, but it's pretty tasty. I mean, the outside alone is awesome enough to justify a purchase. You cut through the fruit, and will encounter a peach-like pit (but smaller). Peel the fruit from outside peel and the inside pit, and enjoy.

8. Passion fruit

I personally have never tried this one, but it's on the bucket list. There may be passion fruit flavored beverages and foods out there, but if you happen to find the deep purple fruit with the vibrant yellow interior, try one for me. Let me know if it lives up to all of our expectations.

9. Dragonfruit

As with the rambutan, this fruit's exterior is cause enough for purchase. However, the fun doesn't stop there. The interior of this hot pink mystery fruit could either be white with black seeds, or a continuation of the deep pinkish purple from the outside, also with black seeds. The flesh is a mildly sweet flavor enjoyable on its own, and the exterior can double as a fancy bowl for serving diced dragonfruit or other fruits.

10. Pomegranate

Last but certainly not least, the in-season pomegranate. How many fruits are there where you actually eat the seeds? Warning-- the fruit's delicious juices can very easily stain, so use lots of paper towels to avoid getting it on your clothes and counter tops.

However, retrieving the seeds can be a pretty simple and fun process. As shown above, slice your pomegranate, score the sections, then submerge in water to loosen the seeds. The seeds sink, the refuse floats. Scoop out the floating parts, and strain the water to leave the seeds.

What fruits do you consider the most fun? Cranberries? Bananas? Kiwis? Comment with your favorite "fun" fruit and reasons below. Try to find new fruits to test over the break, and share the joy of antioxidants, fiber, and adventure with your friends and family.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from.
