Five Reasons to go Greek
Ana Olson

As recruitment time comes around the corner, it is the perfect time to think about going greek. Going greek is one of the best and important decisions I made my first year at college. Finding my home away from home, and meeting a diverse group of empowered girls really helped me feel accepted and supported.

Being apart of greek life goes beyond your own sorority, you’re going to meet dozens of other girls in different chapters. Each chapter and each girl you meet will offer differing perspectives and views.

So why go greek? Well…

1. You’ll Meet Amazing Girls

Starting the first day of recruitment, you’re going to be surrounded by tons of girls. In between house tours and during breaks, you’re going to get to talking with the girls around you. You’ll meet people who share similar interests and ideas-- and vice versa. Some of the most important people in my life I met during recruitment-- each of them ended up in different houses but each of them have helped me and pushed my to be my best.

2. You’ll be apart of something BIGGER

As soon as you accept a bid from a house, you gain 100+ sisters. Everyone in your house genuinely cares about you and wants you in their house. You have a strong and wonderful support system. You’re going to have sisters to go out with, to study with, and to grab late night pizza with. You're going to be doing good, each semester you’ll be volunteering and raising money for the philanthropy associated with your house. College can be hard and stressful, but knowing that no matter what happens, you are helping those in need-- can really help.

3. You’ll be Inspired

A huge part of sisterhood, is being inspired to be the best you, that you can be and to strive forward. With career week, and personal development workshops, it’s easy to be motivated. You’ll be inspired to be your best.

Learning about other girls in your chapter, and the hardships and struggles, will teach you to appreciate what you have and to see the world with an open mind. You’ll be inspired to do you best.

Being in a sorority will help you leave your mark and inspire other girls to do the same.

4. You’ll Find Yourself

When I joined my sorority, I was struggling with finding who I was and who I wanted to be. But knowing that I had people who supported me, and who had my back helped give me the strength to stop trying to place myself into the perfect box, but to accept who I am and to be me-- not who I thought society wanted me to be. Your sisters are there to help you, and they will always be there.

4. You’ll Have Fun

Bottom line, being an a sorority is a bunch of fun. You’ll have sisterhood events where you get to make deeper and meaningful connections with other girls. Work Week, Recruitment Week, Bid Day, Date Parties, Formals, Semi-Formals, Exchanges, Philanthropy Events and countless other events that you’ll have are amazing opportunities to meet others in the Greek community. Each of these events have one thing in common-- they are some of the best parts of your college career and your going to make amazing memories.

Go Greek :)

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
