Why You Should Just Delete Your Finsta

A college student's safe haven or their eminent downfall?

Why You Should Just Delete Your Finsta
Carson Armstrong

The term "finsta" was coined a few years ago to describe Instagram accounts that were created for the owners to be able to post whatever they would like. It became an atmosphere of rants, pictures that were not "rinsta worthy," and any memes that they happened to stumble upon that they felt would make their followers laugh. Most of them are kept private in order to ensure that the content is shared only with whom they wish to share it with. Finstas, in short, serve as a private way to vent anything that is not deemed socially acceptable to be a part of your actual Instagram page. They have become a social outlet of their own.

I am guilty of reveling in the wide world of finstas and utilizing all they have to offer. It seems somewhat comforting to have an audience that I can share every single thought I have during the day. However, will these mediums come back to haunt us?

We have all been told to watch what we post because we want to showcase ourselves in the best light. However, the finsta directly contradicts this ideal. We post weird pictures of ourselves, our frustrations, inappropriate jokes, and anything else we wish to share. These finstas are the opposite of what we wish to share with the entire world. How will this affect us in the future?

I have heard countless stories about people on job interviews and the interviewer looks up their social media right in front of them. What happens when someone finds your finsta and they weren't meant to see it?

Social media has become detrimental to our society when it comes to these things because we are willingly making every detail about ourselves visible. These finstas provide even more clarity than normal and it may become destructive if they are inappropriate.

On the other hand, they allow us to express ourselves easily and interact with others in a casual and fun way. So how do we strike a balance between the two? How do we frame ourselves in a professional light while still allowing ourselves to relish in the fun that is these silly little Instagram accounts?

That is still a question I am unsure of. However, as the issue becomes more and more pressing, a solution becomes direr. I leave you with this, do you believe that finstas are beneficial or that they should become a thing of the past?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
