After the Grammy's aired, social media was flooded with outrage over the lack of female representation at the awards, with good reason. Almost every category was awarded to a male, even when females with better music and/or more successful pieces were in the same category. In response to the backlash, the Recording Academy President, Neil Portnow, said that "women needed to step up" in the music business.
That comment got me thinking about all of the female musicians out there and how they have been dominating the music industry but get absolutely no credit. Here is a list of five female artists who are constantly overlooked by the music industry and by music fans, in general.
1. Sia
Her vocals are out of this world, on record, and live. I can't listen to "Alive" without getting chills, and I've listened to that song at least 100 times and counting. Not only is she a powerhouse vocalist, she's an incredible songwriter, penning hits for artists like Rihanna, Beyonce, and Katy Perry.
2. Taylor Swift
This one can definitely be argued as being overrated. Taylor Swift is one of the most talked about artists, but that is what makes her underrated. Her feuds with other celebrities and her love life are what gets the most attention, not her talent. She has written or co-written almost every single song on all of her albums.
3. P!nk
She has been around since the early 2000s, and I am convinced that she cannot make a bad song. Even her fun and upbeat songs have deeper meanings behind them. And can we just talk about the fact that she slayed the National Anthem at the Super Bowl....with the flu?!
4. Halsey
There are not many "alternative" female artists out there. The only other one I can think of is Lana Del Rey, who also deserves to be on the list. Halsey is another lyrical genius, also writing or co-writing most of the songs on her records. She's only 23 and is one of the most streamed artists on Spotify.
5. Carrie Underwood
She is the most popular artist to come out of American Idol, you cannot argue that. She has one of the best voices in country music, and her songs are anthems for females everywhere. However, she is constantly snubbed of vocalist and album awards.
