While I am a fan of Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck, when I first saw the trailer for her new film, I Feel Pretty, I thought it looked horrible considering that the premise is very similar to Jack Black’s Shallow Hal. However, after deep persuasion from friends I saw the comedy this past Saturday and to my surprise… I loved it.
I Feel Pretty focuses on Renee Bennett (Amy Schumer), a young woman who struggles with low self esteem. Renee’s lack of confidence takes a toll on her life in terms of her career aspirations, friendships and romantic relationships. But, after falling off of her bike in a SoulCycle class, Renee hits her head and eventually wakes up thinking she’s the best thing since sliced bread.
As I watched Schumer’s character gain her consciousness again and look into the locker room mirror I was ready to see who she was now going to look like. Instead of looking like Adriana Lima or some supermodel, Renee sees herself, and there lies the greatness in the film. Rather than change Renee’s physical appearance the only thing that changes is her outlook on herself. This newly discovered confidence motivates Renee into a new career path, which ultimately gains the attention of her fashionable boss and romantic interest, Ethan.
While watching the movie, I was amazed by how rare it is to see female characters with such high self-confidence, specifically in comedies. Sometimes the most gorgeous actresses are playing characters that are unaware of their good looks. They are often more critical of themselves waiting to meet someone and show them that they’re in fact worthy of affection.
Although I Feel Pretty has the typical romantic comedy elements, it has something different to say. The humor doesn’t come from making fun of Schumer’s appearance, but from everyone else’s reactions to this brazenly confident woman. As Renee continues her life radiating positivity and self-love, she inspires those around her to be more comfortable in their own skin. All in all, there is no magical makeover: all that’s changed is how she views herself and she feels pretty.
