Netflix's 'Explained' Is Bite-Sized Education, On The Go

From topics like the racial pay gap to the origin of the exclamation point, this docuseries will leave you fascinated in some way.

This summer has been a great time for great things to watch on Netflix. Season 2 of "Queer Eye" made us laugh and even cry with the Fab Five. Season 6 of "Orange Is The New Black" continued a summer tradition of watching the antics of the women at Litchfield Prison. And soon, Matt Groening will bless us with another one of his creations this August with "Disenchantment." So far, Netflix covered the bases of lifestyle, dramedy, and animation.

But many people don't know about Netflix and Vox.com's new docuseries that covers the documentary field this year as well: "Explained."

"Explained" is different from a typical documentary because every episode only lasts about 20 minutes or so, covering a virtually random subject each week. Some of the topics are household subjects for documentaries, such as the racial wealth gap, the stock market, and weed. Others might seem unconventional, such as the origin of the exclamation point and CRISPR DNA. Moreover, each episode is produced like Vox's content seen throughout social media, which is aesthetically pleasing but can also make some serious issues feel "trendy".

What makes "Explained" stand out, even more, is that it seems that this show is Netflix trying to create more "newsy" content for its growing cable-cutting audience. Though not the first series for the company to do so, with David Letterman's "My Next Guest Needs No Introduction" and Chelsea Handler's now-defunct self-titled talk show, "Explained" has a newsmagazine feeling to it, which cable cutters might yearn for, given the echo chamber of news on social media and elsewhere. Vox leans a bit left of center, but this bias doesn't seem to permeate this new series.

All-in-all, "Explained" is a good choice for anyone that wants to cut the noise when it comes to interesting topics. In a world where we crave instant information, and anecdotal BuzzFeed videos on YouTube, Vox, and Netflix have found a way to tap into that yearning for quick learning onto a platform everyone enjoys.

Below is one episode of the show regarding monogamy:

All episodes of "Explained" are streaming now on Netflix. New episodes premiere every Wednesday.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
